With just over a week until National Signing Day, there are bound to be some twists and turns as Scott Frost looks to wrap up his first recruiting class as the new Huskers head coach. There are currently 20 known commitments in the class with a handful of spots left to be filled. Throughout the entire year, defensive back has been one of the top priorities in the class. With the staff change, we saw a lot of fluctuation there and Frost and his staff have worked hard to get quality players committed in the defensive backfield.
On Tuesday, I learned that 3-star athlete Joseph Norwood has entered the picture for Nebraska’s 2018 recruiting class. Norwood (6-2,160) plays both wide receiver and defensive back for his high school team in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Huskers are looking for him to play defensive back, and he tells me that he got a phone call from a Husker coach yesterday.
“I spoke with Coach [Erik] Chinander, he is the DC and he hasn’t talked to me yet about a specific position but I’m listed as a defensive back so I could come in as either a corner or safety.”
Norwood says that Chinander plans to come visit him on Thursday and that is when they will firm up the visit plans. Even though he has only been talking to Nebraska since yesterday morning, when I asked him about his top schools, he included Nebraska.
“As of right now I have a top five schools," he said. "In no order: Nebraska, Tennessee, Tulane, UMASS and Middle Tennessee State.”
It’s worth noting that neither Nebraska or Tennessee have offered Norwood just yet. Tennessee also recently came into the picture, but it appears the Vols are a little late to the party. When I watch Norwood on film, he looks like the fastest player on the field and is a sure tackler. I expect Nebraska will set up an official visit with Norwood for this weekend.
