Earlier this week, we had our normal call on Twitter for mailbag questions. We got a wide range of topics as always but there was one particular question (via Facebook from Andrew Post) that I thought should be pulled an answered here:
“Do you think that Jamar Sekona is slipping to a California school and Marquis Black is Plan B? Or do you think we have a shot at both (plus Nash) for a huge DT haul?”
I think this question from Andrew is totally fair. It does feel like Nebraska often just-misses out on stacking a position group the way we’ve seen other programs do so recently. It’s too soon to give a complete judgement on that ability during the Frost Era but the haul Nebraska brought in last cycle in the defensive backfield is encouraging.
As for the specific prospects asked about, Nebraska is still recruiting Jamar Sekona hard. The next step there after a very successful spring game visit is to get him and his family out to Lincoln for an official visit. In a perfect world, that visit happens early in the season.
Marquis Black is certainly on the radar of the Huskers staff. In fact, he showed off a cool edit just yesterday on Twitter.

Black is a 6-foot-4 and 280 pound defensive lineman from Georgia. I don’t view him as any sort of “Plan B” though. The big reasons for that is that he’s simply a good prospect. Second, the versatility of each target the Huskers are heavily interested in allows them to recruit more than one defensive tackle prospect.
That was a long way of saying landing Nash Hutmacher should not cause Nebraska to ease up on pursuing other defensive linemen the staff likes. Winning in this league starts in the trenches and you need multiple quality bodies.
