Recruiting never stops and it's easy to miss the top stories day-to-day. Recruiting analyst Greg Smith recaps all things Nebraska recruiting news, analysis and more so you never miss a thing.
Spring football is starting soon for Nebraska. Information about spring practices may be tough to come by once things start up on March 9. Still, football will be back shortly. There are plenty of on-field question to dissect in Year 3 under Scott Frost. It is a big season for the coach looking to reach his first bowl game at Nebraska.
Despite that, there is plenty of recruiting momentum for the Huskers. It shows no sign of slowing down any time soon. It is also a huge spring for recruiting. Considering the quality of targets the team is in the hunt for and when many of them would like to make college decisions, this time is crucial. Several key questions will come up in the lead up to spring practice but the first one I’d like to look at is:
How many times can they get area targets back on campus before official visits?
The Huskers hosted several major targets in January. The team hosted two Junior Days last month. In case you lost track, take a look at the impressive group of players to come through Lincoln since the calendar flipped to 2020.
- TE Thomas Fidone
- OLB TJ Bollers
- CB Avante Dickerson
- WR Keagan Johnson
- WR Brody Brecht
- RB Devin Neal
- DL Derek Wilkins
- DL Ru’Quan Buckley
- ILB Seth Malcom
- DL Ryan Keeler
- QB Heinrich Haarberg
- RB Caleb Berry
- DE Tobechi Okoli
- ILB Tyler McLaurin
- WR Jaylin Noel
- ILB Danny Stutsman
- WR Jace Williams
Those are just some of the players who visited Lincoln last month. The Huskers could put together a top 25 recruiting class based on the players they already have committed and visited in January. Of course, prospects that haven’t been to Lincoln yet will burst on the scene and take visits.
It's expected that Nebraska will have a steady stream of visitors coming through Hawks Championship Center to check out practices for unofficial visits. The Huskers staff holds a general philosophy (that I agree with) that it is a good idea to get prospects around for the up-tempo practices. That allows them to see how the coaches interact with the players.
That has been a powerful recruiting tool in the past so why not keep it going? How many names from this list can the Huskers get back on campus this spring? With many within driving distance of campus it is reasonable to expect a few to wind up at a practice. Or another Junior Day before taking official visits to Nebraska.
It's always good for more exposure for prospects and their families to the environment in Lincoln. That’s a great way to go beyond momentum. That way you can turn those strong relationships into summer commitments.
