You could say that summer is officially over. Why? Because Nebraska high school sports are back in action as of Monday.

It was a busy Monday across the state too. A number of football programs got started early on Monday, like the Westside Warriors. They were on the practice field bright and early at 6 a.m. Scottsbluff and Gering followed, getting to work early Monday morning as well.

McCook also got things started with practice on Monday, with head coach Joe Vetrovsky sharing thoughts about the day with 93.9 The Zone after the morning session concluded.
“We just got done with practice. We’ll come back for a walk-through this evening. We’re allowed to do that. It’ll be a practice but it’ll be more of a walk-through thing,” Vetrovsky said. “We’ll install some things, mainly for special teams, but today you can’t beat the weather we’re dealing with right now considering where it was. I know it’s going to heat back up later but the guys were . . . You could just tell the excitement to get out here and get after it and we put them through a good practice this morning, and a ton of effort so we’re just excited.
“We’ve got things off and rolling and we’re just going to take it one at a time and get ourselves ready for Cozad week one.”
As for Omaha North, the Vikings got things kicked off just before 1 p.m. on Monday. Gretna hit the practice field for a late afternoon session, as well as Waverly, Grand Island and Lincoln East.
We can expect to see more updates throughout the day as teams take advantage of the first day to practice. We can also expect to see plenty of updates throughout the week as teams really get going in their pre-season preparation.
For now, teams are gearing up for the start of the football season. The first week of games (or “week zero” for some) begin Friday, Aug. 19. That means time is of the essence for many of these programs as they prepare for the season ahead.
Welcome back, Nebraska high school football.
Happy official first day of fall practice! Game day is just weeks ahead and looking forward to another great season to come! #NebPreps #FridayNightLights
