Nebraska Recruiting: Having Relationships to Recruit Portal and JUCO Key for Huskers

August 30, 2021

Recruiting never stops and it’s easy to miss the top stories day-to-day. Recruiting analyst Greg Smith recaps all things Nebraska recruiting news, analysis and more so you never miss a thing.

The questions never stop in the recruiting world. No matter what time of year it is, there is always something to talk about so we have been taking reader and listener suggestions on questions. I then answer the questions in a quick video. For this week’s topic we are answering a question from that we saved from last week’s mailbag. This week’s question is all about adding talent to the roster with players from junior college and the transfer portal.

It appears we will be supplementing our recruiting class with JUCO and transfer portal. Do we have a good relationship with JUCO coaches, and is the success of Omar and Nadab imperative to this avenue? (@Oblivio60072055)

It’s a good observation on where things could be heading to add more talent to the team. It will be a small recruiting class of 12-15 recruits. That doesn’t mean that will be the only talent Nebraska adds to the roster this offseason. The Huskers have consistently brought talent to the roster via transfer. The transfer portal has a constant flow of players entering and there will always be opportunities to get talent that way.

Darrion Daniels, Kanawai Noa and Tre Neal were transfer players. They all had big roles on the team. Samori Touré, Chris Kolarevic and Markese Stepp are impact transfers currently.

The junior college route has also produced talented additions to the team. Dedrick Mills, Will Honas Pheldarius Payne and Deontai Williams came to Nebraska from JUCO. Now to the impact of a pair of Nebraska’s recent high-profile additions. Wide receiver Omar Manning arrived in Lincoln with a lot of fanfare. So did defensive back Nadab Joseph. I don’t think either of them will determine Nebraska’s success with portal and JUCO recruiting. The team already mines those areas hard. than

Manning having success might help Nebraska recruit in Texas. He is well-known down there. Joseph could help in some areas of Florida but it’s unclear of the impact there.

The Huskers have the relationships needed to recruit the portal and JUCO ranks. The staff has relationships with coaches all over the country. Offensive coordinator Matt Lubick has a relationship with the Montana coaching staff. That helped Nebraska land Samori Touré.

Nebraska’s JUCO point person is running backs coach Ryan Held. Don’t forget that Held made his name in the coaching community in the JUCO ranks. That was before joining coach Scott Frost’s staff at UCF. Held spent four seasons as a junior college head coach at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M and Highland Community College.

The Huskers’ history under Frost makes me confident in the team’s ability to find talent in the portal. The same goes for JUCO. Those connections in JUCO will be even more important this year. Last year threw everything off at that level too. The Huskers will turn over every rock to add talent.
