Recruiting never stops and it's easy to miss the top stories day-to-day. Recruiting analyst Greg Smith recaps all things Nebraska recruiting news, analysis and more so you never miss a thing.
There has been a lot of talk about the number of Nebraska fans who will make the trip to Boulder this weekend for the matchup with Colorado. Huskers fan are expected to flock to the game to create the latest Big Red takeover of an opponent’s stadium. There is precedence for this with fans having a good showing at Oregon a couple years ago. You can’t forget 2012 when there were so many loud Husker fans at Northwestern that the Wildcats had to go to a silent count. As the home team.
There are plenty of tools for Nebraska to use in recruiting but the fan base consistently comes up.
“It just shows the support we have,” running backs coach Ryan Held said on Wednesday. “This is one of the best places in the country if not the best in terms of our fan support. We know the fans are looking forward to going out to Colorado. That used to be an every other year deal where everyone would love to go out there. It’s a great environment.
“I know our guys are looking forward to going on the road. When you go on the road for the first time, there will be little kinks to work out. We have to see how we respond. We can’t play them all in our beautiful stadium. You have to be able to get it done.”
Prospects visiting Memorial Stadium mention the great fan support in Lincoln. Nebraska’s home sell-out streak stands at 369 games dating back to 1962. No one takes that type of support for granted yet it means even more when that support shows up on the road.
Junior defensive back Dicaprio Bootle has seen the power of Husker fans. He is ready to see it again this Saturday in Boulder. The players appreciate what type of support the fan bases gives.
“Come out and support. Come show love,” Bootle told Hail Varsity on Monday. “We love it any time we can make somebody else’s home turf feel like home to us. Last year in the Northwestern game, we looked around and felt like there were more Husker fans than Northwestern fans. We want the same type of turn out this week going into Colorado. I want to see that thing red.”
It matters to recruits that Nebraska’s fan base is among the most passionate in the country. Fan support and the Huskers' coaching staff are the top two things prospects are impressed by when they visit Lincoln. The stands will always be full in Lincoln. That is not the case at so many places where talks of declining attendance numbers is widespread.
We will see how many Husker fans make it to Boulder but I'd bet on them making their presence felt on Saturday.
