Nebraska Recruiting: Huskers Make Impression on Pair of Newly Offered Prospects

January 30, 2022

Recruiting never stops and it’s easy to miss the top stories day-to-day. Recruiting analyst Greg Smith recaps all things Nebraska recruiting news, analysis and more so you never miss a thing.

The Huskers had another opportunity over the weekend to host prospects and their families for a Junior Day event. The team let the players go through a photoshoot which is always a highlight for prospects. The players also had the opportunity to attend individual meetings with position coaches and have a lunch. One of the interesting things about these events is that new offers always come out of them.

This weekend was no different. The Huskers hosted Georgia 2023 lineman DJ Chester. Chester (6-5, 305) is from the same high school that the Huskers got defensive lineman Marquis Black from a couple cycles ago. The lineman is already a popular recruit down south. He’s got offers from 10 schools including LSU, Miami and Mississippi State. He added the Huskers to that list on Saturday.

Chester told Hail Varsity that his offer left him speechless. He was just thankful to have the opportunity. The Georgia prospect also enjoyed his time on campus.

“I loved it,” Chester said. “Some of the highlights were the basketball game and me being able to come on the field to see how big the stadium really was.”

The lineman would welcome a return trip to Lincoln if he is able to make it.

The Huskers are always active recruiting Georgia but one state the team is trying to make a bigger effort in is Missouri. The team has had the duo of Bill Busch and Mickey Joseph hitting the state. Nebraska has made several offers in the state this month.

The team was able to get a handful of Missouri prospects on campus this weekend. One was 2024 edge rusher Williams Nwaneri. The Lee’s Summit North prospect (6-5, 235) came away from the weekend with a new offer from the Huskers.

Nwaneri told Hail Varsity that it was a great feeling when the Huskers offered him and that he enjoyed the day at Nebraska. The Missouri native liked the Nebraska coaching staff and specifically noted that he thought the whole coaching staff was cool. There were a lot of highlights on the trip but the defender was able to narrow it down.

“The player panel because you can talk to the players that have already gone through what you’re going through,” Nwaneri said.

His recruitment has been picking up steam lately. He’s now at double-digit offers including Iowa, Arkansas and Iowa State. Nwaneri says that he will definitely be back in Lincoln for another visit.

The Huskers appear to be doing a solid job laying ground work during their Junior Days. Every prospect I’ve spoken with has mention he’d like to come back to campus for another visit. Many of the players that have been on campus the last two weeks will become priority targets down the line. The Huskers got a nice start with them by getting them on campus.
