Nebraska Recruiting: Huskers Offer 2023 LB With Husker Connection

May 27, 2021

Recruiting never stops and it’s easy to miss the top stories day-to-day. Recruiting analyst Greg Smith recaps all things Nebraska recruiting news, analysis and more so you never miss a thing.

You never know where you will find a connection, right?

That’s something I wrote about last week after a talk with Nebraska running backs coach Ryan Held. One of the things the Huskers focus on in their recruiting efforts is finding connections with prospects to the program. Sometimes they also find connections to the state or just the area.

On Wednesday night, the Huskers offered a scholarship to 2023 Hawaii linebacker Liona Lefau.

It turns out that Lefau (6-1, 210) grew up with defensive line coach Tony Tuioti’s son Teitum when the Tuiotis lived in Laie. It was cool for Lefau to reconnect with Tuioti. He was thrilled to get the offer from Nebraska.

“It’s a blessing,” Lefau said. “I’ve only seen Nebraska play on TV, don’t know much about them but they seem like an amazing program.”

While Lefau is a recent addition to the Husker offer list, he is a known player by schools around college football. He holds double-digit offers from schools including Michigan, Oregon, Washington and Arizona State. That’s a healthy offer list for a 2023 prospect.

Lefau made the move back to the islands after playing his freshman season at San Juan Capistrano in California. After his first year of high school football interest in him from colleges followed. Lefau wants to be able to make it to the mainland to check out several of the schools that have offered him including Nebraska. It’s difficult to make it work with his schedule and the amount of travel that would be involved.

Now that things are opening up next month the defender wants to make plans on what schools to visit. Even as Lefau figures out which schools he will be visiting, he has a solid idea of what he is looking for in a future home.

“I’m just looking for a school that’ll be my next home and take care of me,” Lefau said. “Not only for football but also for life after football.”
