Nebraska Recruiting: Huskers Offer Texas Quarterback During Visit

November 06, 2022

The Huskers came away empty handed against Minnesota on the field and off, after dealing offers to numerous recruits. Nebraska’s staff hosted several committed and non-committed prospects in Saturday’s game. A lot of them left with the real prospect of playing in Lincoln.

Perhaps the most intriguing offer Nebraska made was extended to senior quarterback JT Fayard of Foster High School in Richmond, Texas. Fayard is a 6-foot-5, 215-pound pro-style quarterback in the 2023 recruiting class. Nebraska interim head coach Mickey Joseph is the primary recruiter going after the unranked field general in suburban Houston. Fayard gained the attention of Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M and Oklahoma but only Nebraska and Northwestern State have offered him so far.

Nebraska also offered Riley Sunram, a lineman out of Kindred, North Dakota. He’s a junior 3-star offensive tackle and defensive end per 247Sports. His size (6 feet, 5 inches and 255 pounds) and athleticism (415 squat and 30-inch vertical) gained the attention of other Division I schools. He holds offers from Minnesota, North Dakota State, Duke, Iowa State and Kansas State. Sunram also received an invitation to the high school combine at the U.S. Army Bowl.

Coy Okeson of Minot, North Dakota, also received a scholarship offer during his visit on Saturday. He’s a 6-foot-6, 280-pound junior and already an All-State lineman for Bishop Ryan High School. Nebraska is the first school to offer him amid recruiting interest from Minnesota and North Dakota State. Koi Perich, a 3-star safety from Esko, Minnesota, left Lincoln with a scholarship offer as well. He’s a junior safety who’s already picked up a scholarship offer from Minnesota.

Nebraska already offered junior lineman Willie Goodacre out of Texas. He came to Lincoln for a visit on Saturday, as did junior 4-star cornerback Mario Buford, the younger brother of current Husker Marques Buford Jr.

The Husker coaching staff also extended preferred walk-on roles to Tristan Alvaro of Omaha Westside and Cole Ballard of Elkhorn South. Ballard set Class A records throughout this season with 1,378 yards and 32 touchdowns as the standout running back for the Storm. Alvaro is Westside’s noteworthy kicker who gained interest from Iowa, Minnesota, Oklahoma and Alabama.

Bellevue West senior tight end Cayden Echternach also came to Memorial Stadium on Saturday and left committed to a preferred walk-on spot with the Huskers next season. Echternach garnered attention from Kansas, Iowa, Kansas State, Iowa State and Wyoming in addition to Nebraska.

Recruit Watch

The state high school playoffs continued with quarterfinal action last week. Gretna quarterback Zane Flores broke the Class A record for career passing yards in the first quarter of the Dragons’ win over Bellevue West. Flores is committed to Oklahoma State while teammates Mason Goldman and Korver Demma have Nebraska ties. Demma is a committed preferred walk-on while Goldman was recently offered a scholarship by Nebraska and has yet to commit.

Nebraska commit Sam Sledge and Creighton Prep upended previously unbeaten Elkhorn South. South includes Nebraska commit Maverick Noonan, the aforementioned Ballard, and Nebraska targets Ashton Murphy and Carson Rauner.

Saturday’s invite list included younger players with a few seasons left to make their marks. That included Will Anderson (Millard West freshman quarterback), Amarion Jackson (Millard South freshman receiver), Mikey Gow (Bellevue East sophomore quarterback), Elijah Wayne (Omaha Central sophomore linebacker) and Pierre Allen Jr. (Lincoln Southeast sophomore edge).

>> The high school state volleyball tournament came to an end and left a few lingering thoughts.

>> Allison Weidner hopes to expand her role for the Nebraska women’s basketball team as the Huskers start their season tomorrow.

>> No. 3 Michigan is the heavy favorite for Saturday’s game against Nebraska.
