Nebraska Recruiting: Huskers Trying to Plant Flag in Iowa

September 16, 2019

Recruiting never stops and it's easy to miss the top stories day-to-day. Recruiting analyst Greg Smith recaps all things Nebraska recruiting news, analysis and more so you never miss a thing.

Nebraska has its sights set on nabbing prospects from a rival state.

It seems like the Huskers have often done battle with Wisconsin this recruiting cycle, especially considering the Huskers and Badgers have a few big common targets. Nebraska defensive tackle commit Nash Hutmacher considered Wisconsin before verbally committing to the Huskers. Arizona linebacker Malik Reed took an official visit to Lincoln over the summer before verbally committing to Wisconsin in a surprise move. The two teams are in an ongoing battle for Minnesota 4-star linebacker Kaden Johnson.

For the 2021 recruiting cycle the battle has already begun but this one is between Nebraska and Iowa. Hoping the Huskers and Hawkeyes become a full-fledged rivalry on the football field? These recruiting battles will only add fuel. The Huskers had a handful of good Iowa 2021 prospects on campus for the first night game of the season and they got to see a big win against Northern Illinois.

Defensive lineman Griffin Liddle, offensive lineman Henry Lutovsky and offensive lineman Carson Petlon were all on hand for the game. They have noticed the Huskers’ increased presence in the Hawkeye State.

“I think it shows that they are very confident in their program and they can pull kids from Iowa,” Lutovsky told Hail Varsity.

Nebraska defensive coordinator Erik Chinander is from Iowa and played for the Hawkeyes. He is now the point man for Nebraska’s efforts in Iowa. Liddle had his own thoughts this weekend on Nebraska dipping into Iowa.

“I think that’s awesome,” Liddle said. “I think Iowa guys are great, especially because it’s next door. They are good guys to recruit. All the Iowa guys are good to recruit. They just get after it. So do the Nebraska guys. So do all the Midwest guys really.

“It’s just a different type of football in the Midwest.”

I think it’s smart for Nebraska to continue to make noise in Iowa, especially in the trenches where the Hawkeyes have dominated Nebraska on Black Fridays in recent years. There are more good Iowa players heading to Lincoln this season. Big-time outside linebacker TJ Bollers will be back in town for the Ohio State game. Inside linebacker Seth Malcom will also be in Lincoln for the Ohio State game. Jeffrey Bowie, another defensive lineman, will be back in Lincoln this season too.

There is a lot of recruiting of these players left to be done. It is not easy to go into Iowa and pluck players that the Hawkeyes (and Cyclones) want badly. Yet, it can get accomplished. It certainly helps when you start recruiting the players as sophomores in many cases. Nebraska is doing a good job of building relationships so it can be in the mix for these talented players.
