Nebraska Recruiting: Legacy Recruit Ian Flynt Drawn to Genuine Coaching Staff

February 28, 2023

Nebraska extended a scholarship offer to 2024 tight end Ian Flynt on December 21—Early Signing Day. In reality, he was tied to Nebraska at birth.

Darren Flynt threw on the Nebraska track team in the mid-1990s. At that time, so did Dagmar Pesakova, a native of Olomouc, Czech Republic. Their love for Nebraska athletics continued after graduation and subsequent move to Texas. Their daughter, Amelia, also throws in track. Amelia signed with the California track team as a freshman before transferring to Nebraska. They had a pseudo family reunion at Memorial Stadium when Matt Rhule’s coaching staff invited Ian for a visit this winter. Ian loved it so much he wanted to return for his next visit, as part of the VIP Junior Day in late March.

Ian said he loved how personable Matt Rhule and his coaching staff are. Darren agreed completely. His daughter now works in recruiting for the football team so Darren’s gotten to know the staff.

“They kind of are who you think they are,” Darren said.

Even on Ian’s January visit, football talk subsided and gave way to a more personal connection. That made him feel a little more at home. So does the prospective style of play.

The high school junior is most recently listed at 6-foot-5, 250 pounds. He said he likes the physicality of run blocking and delivering hits. That stereotypical Big Ten style suits him. He also uses his blue collar mentality with his athleticism to break out in the passing game.

“I like the versatility,” Ian recently told Hail Varsity about playing tight end. “We always start with a run play. I don’t think I’ve ever started a game that doesn’t start with a run play. And the tight end is a big part of that.

“I go out there, block a guy 10 yards off the ball, and the next play the safety bites because they’re worried about me in the run, and I run right by him.”

Darren thinks his son is better suited for the faster college game as well. While the talent across from him will increase, the time he needs to hold his block decreases. Ian still wants to improve his run blocking and catching abilities going into his senior high school season. At Katy last season he predominantly worked at run blocking. He finished the season with 10 catches for 129 yards and two touchdowns.

Schools like Kansas, Rice, Tulane, Houston and Purdue are also involved in Ian’s recruitment. Of course, that picture might change after his visit in March.

Recruit Watch

Nebraska offered a scholarship to consensus 4-star defensive back Koy Beasley from La Salle High School in Cincinnati. Beasely is an athletic coverage man in the 2024 recruiting class who has improved his indoor 60-meter time to 6.78 seconds this winter.

Houston, Texas, interior offensive lineman Gibson Pyle is due to visit Lincoln this upcoming weekend. He’s a composite 3-star recruit in the 2024 recruiting class from Klein Cain High School. Later in March, Lyndon, Kansas, offensive tackle Kaedin Massey is scheduled to visit Lincoln. He’s a 6-foot-8 3-star recruit.

>> The Nebraska baseball team put its opening-weekend woes behind them by sweeping South Alabama. The bats came alive and the Huskers dominated the last two games. Will Bolt’s squad now regroups ahead of a big weekend.

>> Three super seniors on the Nebraska men’s basketball team will be among those honored tonight in the regular-season home finale against Michigan State tonight. This is becoming the most successful season in Fred Hoiberg’s tenure at Nebraska. He cited those three seniors as a large part of that.

>> The Huskers pulled away from Northwestern over the weekend to end the regular season. That win sends Amy Williams’ team into the Big Ten Tournament with some momentum. They’ll tip off with Michigan State on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. with the winner headed to No. 1 Indiana in the quarterfinals.
