Nebraska Recruiting: Lot to Like About Incoming Defensive Backs

April 22, 2019

Recruiting never stops and it's easy to miss the top stories day-to-day. Recruiting analyst Greg Smith recaps all things Nebraska recruiting news, analysis and more so you never miss a thing.

Last Friday in Big Red Recon (Premium), I wrote about how the defensive backs big board for the 2020 class seems to very fluid right now. That’s not really a bad thing considering we are just entering Week 2 of the evaluation period where Nebraska’s coaches can get out on the road and see prospects in person.

We know that defensive backs coach Travis Fisher has stopped through Highland Community College where 2020 cornerback target Brian George plays, along with 2019 commit Jahkeem Green. Based on Fisher’s short track record at Nebraska, there isn’t any reason to panic about what appears to be a lack of a clear top group of targets at the moment.

If you think back to last recruiting cycle, there is an argument to be made that Travis Fisher added the most overall talent to his position group of any coach on the staff. Myles Farmer, Javin Wright, Quinton Newsome and Noa Pola-Gates are all prospects that Fisher is excited about joining the fold. All of those guys made it back to the spring game. Pola-Gates posted this photo of them all with running back Rahmir Johnson.

Before the spring game, Fisher spoke about how things will change when they arrive.

“It ramps up a whole lot more,” Fisher said. “Those guys that are coming in are very talented guys. I’m looking forward to those guys finishing high school the right way and coming here to be an impact for us right away.”

It could be that the Huskers know they can take their time evaluating the right fit for Fisher’s room in the 2020 class, knowing that they have some talented young players coming into the program this summer. There are only two senior defensive backs on the roster who are regular contributors so spots may be tight for defensive backs in 2020.
