The Huskers hosted a number of players for the Red-White Spring Game on Saturday. There are targets who are already well-known coming into the weekend—and it’s always fun to track those players—but the team also uses these events to see players in person as part of their evaluation.
That often leads to players bursting onto the radar and picking up an offer from the school.
That is what happened with 2024 tight end Christian Bentancur. The Illinois native (6-5, 240) came to Lincoln for the game because he and his family have always liked Lincoln. They know that Nebraska is a traditional power that plays in the Big Ten. That made them want to check out Nebraska and meet with all the coaches.
“They blew our minds, because I didn’t know how good the facilities were gonna be but it was amazing,” he said. “Plus, the new $150 million facility that they’re putting in, that’ll be done by next year. That’s just absolutely crazy.”
The playmaking tight end was joined on the trip by his mom and dad. They checked out the Haymarket area in downtown Lincoln before the game. The trio even had a meal at Leadbelly and had a peanut butter burger on coach Scott Frost’s recommendation.
It was surprising for Bentancur to see how many people showed up to Memorial Stadium for the game. There was a decent amount of people in the stands when he first arrived. To see 50,000 fans out for a scrimmage says a lot about the fan base to him.
The weekend was filled with highlights for Bentancur. He really enjoyed sitting down with Nebraska’s tight ends coach Sean Beckton.
“Coach Beckton is a really down to earth guy,” Bentancur said. “He’s really cool to talk to and he had really good goals for the future of the program. He’s a good religious man which I like too. It was good.”
It was during that conversation with Beckton that the he was offered by the Huskers.

“We just finished the spring game and then we were just in the players’ lounge,” Bentancur said. “I got asked to go in a private meeting with Coach Beckton. We were talking for a little bit and had a nice conversation about the program and how we liked it.
“Then he said after seeing my film, he really enjoyed it. After watching it he was like, ‘How have we not offered this guy?’ Then he offered me a scholarship which is absolutely nuts. The rest of the day and today too I was just so happy and blessed that I have the opportunity to play there.”
It’s Bentancur’s dream to play in the NFL one day so taking another step in that direction was special to him. He knows that his hard work on and off the field is paying off. He also has an offer from Iowa State that came a couple weeks ago. He recently visited Ohio State. Next up is Iowa, Northwestern, Wisconsin and Illinois.
“The main things I’m looking for are is it a successful program. Are they gonna use me to be successful? Another thing is just the family atmosphere,” Bentancur said. “Are they going to have my back and is it going to be a nice place for me to go. I just want to be in a family atmosphere. One that everyone is there for each other. Obviously, I want to win some championships.”
The thing that stood out to the tight end most about visiting Nebraska was the people. He said everyone he met was cool and down to earth including the coaching staff. Bentancur plans to return to Lincoln for a game in the fall.
