Nebraska Recruiting: NFL Combine Could Provide Potential Boost for Huskers on Trail

February 27, 2022

Recruiting never stops and it’s easy to miss the top stories day-to-day. Recruiting analyst Greg Smith recaps all things Nebraska recruiting news, analysis and more so you never miss a thing.

There are so many factors that go into landing recruits. Every college football program is trying to find a unique edge to pitch recruits. Every school would like to be known for developing players to the NFL and the reason is simple: every recruit has dreams of making it to the NFL. It comes up all the time in interviews. It boosts recruiting efforts if a school has earned the reputation of sending players to the next level.

The Huskers lost a good number of players this offseason that have pro aspirations. A lot of the Huskers’ difference makers will need to be replaced in a critical season. That production and leadership will be difficult for coach Scott Frost to replace. Coach Scott Frost spoke about the impact of losing those players in December.

“Those were tough decisions. I respect those guys and appreciate so much what all those guys have poured into our program,” Frost said. “For some of the guys that are leaving, they’ve been here five years or started four years. I wish them nothing but the best. I would have liked to keep a lot of them here. Those guys are making the decisions that they think are best for them.

“Every one of them, I had great conversations with them and talked to them about hoping they succeed and they want us to succeed and do well. There are programs all over the country that are losing guys. Replacing those types of guys aren’t going to be easy but that’s our job and we’ll get there.”

The Huskers have done their best to replace those players with a large number of transfers coming into the program. There is a silver lining to losing these NFL hopefuls. It gives Nebraska another opportunity to have players drafted into the NFL. Nebraska has had four players drafted since Frost took over the program.

There are four Huskers who received NFL Combine invites this year. Tight end Austin Allen and center Cam Jurgens are representing the program on offense. Linebacker JoJo Domann and defensive back Cam Taylor-Britt are representing the Blackshirts.

Each player has an intriguing skill set that could catch the eyes of NFL scouts. Each has a chance of being drafted with a good showing at the combine this week in Indianapolis. The Huskers gain another important recruiting tool if that happens. The program created a position to utilize Domann’s unique skill set. Frost saw a 4-star tight end and converted him to a draft-ready center. Taylor-Britt is the Huskers’ best evaluation win during Frost’s tenure. He has the chance to be the first player recruited by Frost to be drafted. Allen got better under the teaching of tight ends coach Sean Beckton.

Having those examples of success at Nebraska to tell recruits is a big deal. It also gives players already on the team something to strive for. These four players won’t help the Huskers on Saturdays this fall. They do still play an important role in the program’s future with how their careers turn out from here.
