Nebraska Recruiting: Post-Spring Update on Huskers and Transfer Portal

April 18, 2022

Recruiting never stops and it’s easy to miss the top stories day-to-day. Recruiting analyst Greg Smith recaps all things Nebraska recruiting news, analysis and more so you never miss a thing.

The questions never stop in the recruiting world. No matter what time of year it is, there is always something to talk about so we take reader and listener suggestions on questions. I then answer the questions in a quick video. This week’s topic comes from the YouTube comments. User IndaWilderness wants to know how many Huskers we expect to hit the portal this summer. He also wants to know how many players we expect Nebraska to bring in and at what positions.

The questions are clearly related. As I noted in the video, we do spend the majority of our time talking about who could potentially join the Huskers.

The portal does work both ways. The program does need a few players move on from the program to get under the 85-man scholarship limit in August. That isn’t a big concern though as just having normal attrition will take care of that.

Let’s think through where the Huskers could lose players. There were a few themes this round of spring football. We’ve heard from players and coaches about competition. There was a lot at many position groups. If we just look at those positions that starts to give us clues about where players may leave from.

Running back is a position to watch based on numbers. The Huskers have five scholarship running backs on campus right now. There are a pair of high schoolers that will enter the mix this summer. Texas A&M transfer Deondre Jackson is scheduled to join the team this summer too. It would make a lot of sense if a running back moved on this spring.

Things are always fluid for the Huskers at wide receiver. When wide receivers coach Mickey Joseph came to town he brought in several new wideouts to compete. Some of those players have leapfrogged younger players on the roster quickly. That could open the door for more attrition at that spot even with Zavier Betts leaving the program.

Quarterback is a wildcard position at this point. It makes sense for one of them to leave the program if you only look at the surface. That’s where we are in college football today. If you look a little closer you might pause on that thought. Casey Thompson is the presumed starter and going nowhere. Chubba Purdy is still battling and just got to Lincoln. Logan Smothers was committed to Nebraska for years and seems to really like the school and Lincoln. Heinrich Haarberg is a local player that would do well developing under Mark Whipple. Richard Torres just got to campus too.

The Huskers’ needs in the portal haven’t changed much since the start of spring ball. The team is pushing hard to land TCU EDGE transfer Ochaun Mathis. He’s one of the best players available in the portal and the Huskers need him to boost their pass rush. The team could also use at least one interior defensive lineman. Numbers are low there and the young players might still be a year away from competing in the Big Ten.

We should see movement on the attrition front as early as this week. The Huskers have begun post-spring conversations with players. Other teams are wrapping up spring football soon too. We are only at the start of portal talk for this offseason.
