Nebraska Recruiting: Prospects Ready to Show Skills in Front of Husker Coaches and Fans

June 02, 2022

Recruiting never stops and it’s easy to miss the top stories day-to-day. Recruiting analyst Greg Smith recaps all things Nebraska recruiting news, analysis and more so you never miss a thing.

Camp season is here and that’s great for coaches, prospects and fans. The Friday Night Lights camp series is very popular and will be back again this year. There are four camps that will be open and free for fans at Memorial Stadium this year. The following four camps will be open to the public:

  • Friday Night Lights (June 3)
  • 7-on-7 camp (June 5)
  • Friday Night Lights part two on (June 17)
  • Adidas OL/DL Pipeline camp (June 18)

The camp on June 3 will be held from 6-8 p.m. with the gates to the stadium (Gate 3) opening at 5 p.m. All seating for the camps will be in West Stadium sections 21-31.

It adds to the atmosphere of these camps with Husker fans being out there. You never know if you’ll catch a young Micah Parsons scoring touchdowns on a slew of 4-star defensive backs like we saw a few years back. These camps can be important for prospects looking to get on the radar of Husker coaches. Each year there are players that impress at camp and end up being offered by the team. Georgia 2023 athlete Jordan Thornton will be among the players hoping to impress.

Senior director of player personnel and recruiting Vince Guinta explained why camps are valuable.

“Camps are critical because as much as you want to put on film, that is great, but to get young men here on to campus and to watch them compete, to watch how they take coaching, to see the look in their eyes when they’re out on that field – you can feel it,” Guinta said on Sports Nightly. “It’s a totally different vibe than you can replicate on film and it says a lot if a young man is willing to come here and perform for you, right? Because that’s what they’re doing, they’re coming here to perform.”

There are a few different things that create value in these camps for players. Getting better might have been the original intent of these camps but there has been a shift and Guinta is well aware of what prospects are after.

“I’m going to demonstrate my skills, I’m going to gain some skills while I’m at camp,” Guinta said. “Maybe I’m going to learn a few extra pass rush moves and I’m going to get coached by the best so my game will get better from having gone. But really it’s, ‘let me go showcase my talents, let me put myself on the radar.’ To have those young men here says a lot about their commitment to the game and about their interest in this university. I love tough, competitive players and it’s hard to find that out going to a spring practice where you can’t coach them.”

This is a big month for prospects hoping to improve their recruiting stock. Not only will they have a chance to work directly with Nebraska coaches to get an offer but they can get verified measurables. In a lot of cases teams want to verify size before offering. Soon we will get more success stories of players getting offers and that is what camp season is all about.
