There are a lot of question marks about what we will see with the 2021 Huskers. Wide receiver Samori Touré’s fit into the team is one thing that doesn’t seem to be a worry at all. He’s got a pretty good idea of what his role is going to be on game day.
“Yeah, I definitely have a good idea of my role,” Touré said. “They kind of gave me a good idea of that before I even got here. But even throughout spring ball and especially fall camp, it’s kind of its kind of been clearly defined. I’m excited for it.”
Touré transferred into Nebraska this offseason from Montana. He’s an older player but he’s still new to the Huskers. It’s been easy to forget he’s new because his teammates already look to him as a leader. Offensive coordinator Matt Lubick has been impressed with him since arriving on campus.
“He developed a lot of good habits at the University of Montana. He brought those with them and we’ve tried to enhance them,” Lubick said. “He works his tail off. He’s a fast learner. He’s very talented and we can do a lot of different things with him.”
What’s impressed Lubick the most with Touré is how fast he’s picked everything up. The wideout has put the time in on his own to get up to speed quickly. He also worked hard to get on the same page as quarterback Adrian Martinez.
The original plan was to slow things down for Touré and let him transition slowly. He learned things so quickly that the offensive staff gave him the full offense ahead of schedule. Nebraska figured out early on that Touré could handle that.
“I had a good feeling when he came here,” Lubick said. “I’m friends with the University of Montana coaches and they actually gave him a great endorsement. That usually doesn’t happen when a guy transfers, especially one of their best players. They kind of knew was like this guy wants to pursue his dream of playing at a different level. If he doesn’t go to your place, he’s going to go somewhere else.”
The Montana staff gave an assist to Nebraska in landing Touré. They knew what type of learner and leader he is and thought he’d fit nicely into the Huskers’ scheme. The other players at Nebraska also really embraced Touré. Lubick thinks that gave him a boost of confidence and motivation. It’s not easy being a new guy who is also a veteran player that has been successful elsewhere. He arrived in Lincoln as a former All-American that could be an NFL Draft pick.
Things are going so well for Touré’s transition into Nebraska. That is a great example of how the transfer portal can be used for good. We spend a lot of time bemoaning the players lost by the portal. It’s easy to forget these stories exist and the portal has worked in Nebraska’s favor too.
