Nebraska Recruiting: Scott Frost Ready to Hit Road Recruiting During Bye Week

October 20, 2021

Recruiting never stops and it’s easy to miss the top stories day-to-day. Recruiting analyst Greg Smith recaps all things Nebraska recruiting news, analysis and more so you never miss a thing.

The bye week for Nebraska gives everyone in the program a chance to recharge and relax a bit before the stretch run of the season. It’s been a grind playing eight straight weeks for the players and coaches so the break is needed. The bye week is also a great opportunity for Nebraska to get out on the road recruiting. It’s been since 2019 since the team was able to do it.

Coach Scott Frost said on Wednesday that it’ll be good to get back on the road.

“Yeah, that’s been tough,” Frost said. “Particularly being in Nebraska and not being able to get out on the road. We haven’t been on the road in 600-plus days, it’s been a long time. It’s just unfortunate. This recruiting class, we’re going to focus on maybe some immediate impact guys a little more.

“Probably not sign as many freshmen. When you’re as close as we’ve been one or two more pieces will get you over the hump. So, we’re probably going to look to the transfer portal a little more. Look to junior college a little more and focus on those areas to make sure we replace a couple guys we might be losing and try to add just a couple more pieces.”

Part of the reason why it’s been so long since the coaching staff has been on the road recruiting was the pandemic. No one was allowed on the road last season. Yet it’s been allowed for coaches to be on the road before this week. There was no rule stating Nebraska had to wait until the bye week to hit the road but there wasn’t a big rush to get out and recruit. It’s important for Nebraska to push the program and search for players when possible. Tight ends coach Sean Beckton was hoping to get out on the road last month. I asked him then about the balance of coaching the current team and recruiting.

“We have not been out. Coming up Minnesota wise I might be going up to see a couple kids before we play that game,” Beckton said. “Hopefully Coach Frost signs off on it. He doesn’t like to do it too much but we’ll see what happens there. If I can get over during the day to see some guys and then get back for our meetings in the afternoon. If we can make that work. We’re going to try to get that done.”

Nebraska didn’t see players before the Minnesota game but now the plan is use the bye week to catch up. Part of the strategy for this recruiting cycle is to hit the transfer portal as Frost said. The Huskers will need to bridge the gap because of the small class. Frost noted a major difference between high school recruiting and the portal. Recruiting from the portal happens faster. It’s always unclear who will end up in the portal so you have to make fast decisions and be on top of it.

Frost didn’t want to go into specifics on positions of need as the team evaluates the portal and JUCO prospects. The team will be looking for the best players available. The goal will be to take the young core of players on the team and mix in some impact players. The hunt for those impact players starts this week during the bye.
