Nebraska Recruiting: Searching for the Next Wave of Blackshirts

December 28, 2018

Recruiting never stops and it's easy to miss the top stories day-to-day. Recruiting analyst Greg Smith recaps all things Nebraska recruiting news, analysis and more so you never miss a thing.

For the rest of this recruiting cycle as Nebraska finished out the class of 2019, the majority of what we will be talking about is defensive players. Sure, there will be a few offensive players that come up between now and February but the bulk of the talk will be on the other side of the ball.

With that in mind, perhaps we should understand what type of mentality the Huskers’ coaching staff is looking for in future Blackshirts. Coach Scott Frost elaborated on that subject during his signing day press conference last Wednesday.

“When we’re recruiting defense we want athletic ability, but we’re also looking for toughness,” Frost said. “In fact, when we go out on the road that’s two of our priorities to look for is upside, athletic ability (and) to look for and a guy that you would want to be in a scrap with. That kind of edge, that kind of mentality, that kind of toughness and aggressiveness.

“That’s what Husker defense has been built on, as I knew it, and the more guys we can get like that I think the better mentality the whole defense will be.”

The Huskers have certainly signed a few prospects that fit the type of defender that Frost described. Now the trick will be finding more of them to add to the roster over the late period. There will be no lack of discussion about potential defensive additions to the program over the next several weeks.

>> The Huskers continue to keep their eyes toward 2020 as they offered 4-star wide receiver JJ Evans. He already holds offers from Alabama, Clemson, Florida and others.

>> The Huskers added a walk-on commitment from Creighton Prep linebacker John Bullock.

>> Nebraska also added a walk-on commitment from kicker Gabe Heins from Kearney.
