Now that March is here, the recruiting dead period is over for Nebraska.
The Huskers have concluded winter conditioning. Spring football is set to get underway on March 9. That return to action on the football field is a welcome sight for many. There will be plenty of questions that need to be answered about Scott Frost’s program heading into Year 3. Some will be answered this spring while others will have to wait until August before we get a clear picture.
Still, the return of spring football will mean the return of action on the recruiting trail.
As we turn our attention back toward Husker football, what are some of the biggest items that Nebraska needs to take care of this spring?
Objective One: Get top targets back to Lincoln
The Huskers did great work getting many top targets to campus for visits back in January. A lot of targets that came to Lincoln for Junior Days came away impressed with what they found especially the strength and conditioning presentation. The next step for the Huskers is to get as many of those players (and new ones) to campus for practices or the spring game. The Huskers have strong relationships with a number of targets but need to keep building towards summer commitments.
Objective Two: Set summer official visits
This will be especially important for the Huskers 2021 recruiting class. There is no shortage of key targets that have intentions on making decisions before their senior seasons. It would be difficult to land those targets without getting them to take summer (or even spring game) official visits. June 12 and June 19 look like they will be good visit weekends for the Huskers. Inside linebacker Chris Paul Jr. and wide receiver Keagan Johnson will visit on June 12 weekend. The Huskers will surely build official visits around Friday Night Lights (June 19) and the Pipeline Camp (June 20).
Objective Three: Evaluate key positions
This one bleeds over to on-field spring practices but for good reason. These practices will be great for the team and will be a showcase for recruits. These spring practices will also allow the coaching staff to evaluate where the current players are on their development tracks. The answers they find will let them know just how much to pursue certain position groups on the recruiting trail or grad transfer market.
After the spring we will check back in on these objectives to see how the Huskers did. How well the Huskers do with these topics and more will determine how we feel about Nebraska recruiting heading into a critical season.
