Nebraska Recruiting: Taking a Look at Potential Trio of 2023 Greg’s Guys

January 04, 2022

Recruiting never stops and it’s easy to miss the top stories day-to-day. Recruiting analyst Greg Smith recaps all things Nebraska recruiting news, analysis and more so you never miss a thing.

Earlier today the latest edition of the Greg’s Guys list came out. It’s the first list of the new year as we turn the page to 2022. Now we have gotten beyond the early signing period. The focus will intensify even more on transfer additions. It’s gotten difficult to talk about the 2022 class without including the impact of transfers. Four of the five players on the list this month are transfers.

As the numbers are getting tighter for 2022. I’ve made this group of players three 2023 prospects that have my attention. These are three players that could pop up on the Greg’s Guys list for the 2023 class. We aren’t far from the page getting turned to that cycle. Let’s take a look at three players to keep an eye on for the Huskers next cycle.

Running Back Cedric Baxter Jr.

One thing that is hard to do currently is project running back recruiting for the Huskers. The team doesn’t have a running backs coach and his view on things could change the picture completely. A tweaked offensive system might need some new skill sets. The Huskers are also still learning what types of running backs work best in the Big Ten. Depending on who gets hired a name to watch could be Baxter. Standing at 6-foot-1, 215 pounds with good speed, he can fit in many offenses. The Florida native did not have Nebraska in his recent top seven. Those change quickly with all the coach movement around the country.

Defensive Back Kylin Jackson

The impact on the 2023 recruiting class of wide receivers coach Mickey Joseph will be fun to follow. The Huskers are hoping that Joseph can help open doors to prospects in Louisiana. The hope is that getting more Louisiana prospects to Lincoln for visits can help. One of the more recent offers for the 2023 class is Jackson, a defensive back from Zachary High School. Jackson (6-1, 195) has some good early offers. They include Arkansas, Virginia Tech and Texas A&M. He’s a long and lean prospect with good upside.

Linebacker Phil Picciotti

The Huskers have continued trying to make a push into recruiting the northeast more. Defensive coach Mike Dawson is on staff and leading that charge. New Jersey has been increasingly good to the program. Could their sights be set on Pennsylvania for a linebacker target in the 2023 class? Right before Christmas the Huskers offered Pennridge High School standout Phil Picciotti. Penn State, Oklahoma and Notre Dame were among the schools recruiting him hard this season. Picciotti (6-3, 225) took visits to each, but two of the three went through coaching changes. Could that be the opening the Huskers need to gain traction with the linebacker? He projects as an inside linebacker in the Huskers’ 3-4 defense.
