Nebraska Recruiting: The Arizona Connection Is Heating Up

January 21, 2019

Recruiting never stops and it's easy to miss the top stories day-to-day. Recruiting analyst Greg Smith recaps all things Nebraska recruiting news, analysis and more so you never miss a thing.

It was a big deal when 4-star defensive back Noa Pola-Gates announced his intentions to play at Nebraska on Saturday. Yes, Pola-Gates is a fantastic defensive prospect and the Huskers are getting one of the elite athletes in this recruiting cycle.

There is a big picture topic to discuss here too. During the 2019 recruiting class, Nebraska cleaned up in Arizona.

Nebraska has signed two of the top five players in the state of Arizona (Pola-Gates and Ty Robinson) and are still in the mix with another top player in the state, defensive tackle Matthew Pola Mao. Defensive back Javin Wright is also regarded as a top 15 player in a state that produced a number of Power 5 players this season.

By comparison, Arizona State’s highest ranked player in the state is ranked No. 22 per 247sports. Arizona’s highest ranked player from the state is ranked No. 32. The work that Nebraska has done in the Grand Canyon State bodes well for the class of 2020 where Nebraska has a number of scholarship offers out already.

There are a number of top 2020 Arizona prospects with interest in Nebraska, including 5-star cornerback Kelee Ringo‍, 4-star wide receiver Brenden Rice‍ and 4-star defensive back Jacobe Covington‍ among others. Look for the increased focus on Arizona to continue.
