Nebraska Secures Commitment From In-State Crown Jewel, 4-Star Carter Nelson

June 28, 2023

The 8-man wonder of Nebraska, top in-state recruit of the 2024 class, is staying home.

Inside the gym at Ainsworth High School and surrounded by his supporters, tight end Carter Nelson announced his commitment to play football at Nebraska on Wednesday. This is the second year in a row the Huskers secured the top in-state recruit, following Malachi Coleman’s decision in December.

Nelson is a 4-star recruit and No. 2 tight end in the country. He’s a 6-foot-4, 205-pound recruit with strength to block and athleticism to move in traffic. In the last two years at Ainsworth, Nelson’s tallied 866 passing yards with 18 passing touchdowns, 783 rushing yards with 14 touchdowns and 1,036 receiving yards with 19 touchdowns. On defense he made 41 tackles, 4.0 for loss and six interceptions last season. He’s a standout basketball player and track athlete, registering a 7-foot leap in the high jump and clearing over 14 feet in the pole vault.

Nebraska offered him last summer, well before Nelson’s recruitment took off. Oklahoma, Penn State and Notre Dame offered him at the end of his junior season before offers from Michigan, Alabama and Georgia in 2023. Several major programs, including Notre Dame, Kansas State and Nebraska, traveled to Ainsworth to recruit Nelson in January. He took official visits to Georgia, Penn State and Notre Dame before his final official visit to Lincoln this past weekend.

Nelson visited Memorial Stadium while in Lincoln for the 2023 NSAA Girls State Basketball Tournament in early March. He returned for the high-profile Junior Day on March 25. He returned numerous times since the spring and spent the last week with Nebraska commit quarterback Daniel Kaelin.

Nelson is the No. 21 recruit in Nebraska’s 2024 recruiting class. He’s the fourth 4-star in the class and sixth in-state recruit. He joins Ian Flynt and Keelan Smith as tight ends in the class.
