Nebraska’s Top 2023 Quarterback Target Reese Mooney Closing in on Decision

October 11, 2021

It’s important to get top targets on campus each week that Nebraska can host recruits. The Huskers were able to do that back-to-back weeks with quarterback targets.

Dylan Raiola, the team’s top 2024 target at the position, visited for the Northwestern game. The Huskers followed that up for the Michigan game by hosting 2023 quarterback Reese Mooney.

“The visit was great,” Mooney said. “I liked it a lot. The atmosphere was really awesome.”

The Louisiana native had high expectations for the visit coming into the trip. He’s been to Lincoln a few times so he was excited to see campus on a game day. The visit met all expectations. He shared that it was cool finding out that Nebraska graduates 94% of its players. He was also blown away by the fan support and how loud the stadium was all game. It also helped that the Huskers let him know that he is their top quarterback target for the 2023 cycle.

“It feels great,” Mooney said. “It makes me work even harder. I have coaches that really trust me. I don’t want to let people down.”

Mooney was not able to meet with Nebraska’s coaches the other times he visited due to a dead period in place. This time he got to meet with quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco. That meeting went well. Mooney also met with baseball coach Lance Harvell. The signal-caller has interest in playing football and baseball in college. Flight changes kept him from getting to meet with coach Scott Frost.

As Mooney continues to check his options there are a few things that he is looking for in a future home.

“I’m looking for academics plus a place I can develop and become better on and off the field,” Mooney said. “I also want to be able to have a good relationship with my coach. Also, a good fan base is just extra and facilities is a big plus also.”

Mooney does have a decision timeline in mind. He’d like to commit right after football season or even before it ends. He wants to check out a couple more places before deciding on a school. West Virginia is one of the schools he wants to get to but is unsure of the other. He’s checking out every option he can so that when he does commit there is no doubt that is the school for him. Mooney also wants to help recruit at his future school so he wants time to do that.

The dual-threat quarterback got to see a lot during his time in Lincoln. As he reflects back on his visit to Nebraska, there are a couple things that stood out to him most about the weekend.

“The fan base. They are so into the game the whole game and they stay the whole game,” Mooney said. “The new facilities they are building are going to be crazy.”
