This weekend marks the final weekend teams can host official visitors before National Signing Day next Wednesday. There is always an advantage to going last and getting the opportunity to make the final big impression on a recruit and his family. The Huskers will host five official visitors this weekend. Here’s a preview of what’s to come.
OT Willie Canty
The 3-star tackle from Florida is strongly looking at Louisville, but Nebraska will get the final shot with him this weekend. The staff is not starting from scratch with him as they recruited him when they were at UCF. He has great size (6-6, 290) and athletic ability to grow into a true tackle down the road.
WR Andre Hunt
Hunt is someone that Troy Walters is very high on. Walters went in-home with him last Sunday as soon as Hunt returned from Corvallis on his official to Oregon State. Hunt has great speed and was once a USC commit before the Trojans backed off. He could be special if his hands improve. He has a final three of Nebraska, Oregon State and San Diego State.
DT Otito Ogbonnia
Ogbonnia might be the biggest wildcard of the entire weekend. He is a clear “take” for the staff if he wants in. He throws discus and would like to do so in college, so expect the Davis twins to spend some time with him this weekend. This one looks like a Tennessee, UCLA, Texas Tech and Nebraska battle. Don’t rule out the Huskers final pitch to him.
CB Ken Montgomery
Nebraska’s search for true cornerbacks had led them to Montgomery, a Tampa native with great size (6-2, 165) but who is a little raw. The Huskers are making a big late charge here as they try to beat out Maryland for his services. Ideally, Nebraska will take two players between Montgomery, Cam Taylor and Taiyon Palmer.
If I told you before the season that Arizona State coach Herm Edwards and Nebraska coach Scott Frost would be battling for a dynamic running back recruit, you would have laughed at me. That’s the situation we find ourselves in. Frost and five assistants went to Dallas to meet with Washington this week before Frost went to California to meet with Washington’s mother. Arizona State pulled ahead after they got the first official visit, but look for Nebraska to make a huge impression this weekend with Washington and his mother.
Prediction: Every prospect on campus this weekend has the green light to commit. In order of confidence, I believe Nebraska will land Washington, Canty, Hunt and Montgomery. That’s not counting players like Cam Taylor, Matthew Tago and Javontae Jean-Baptiste who I expect to join the class. Buckle up for a fun ride until Wednesday.
