Spring Game Visitor Preview: Defense

April 14, 2017

Nebraska’s spring game is just a day away, and it is shaping up to be the most loaded visitor weekend in recent memory for the Huskers. More than 30 prospects for the 2018 class are expected to be in Lincoln on April 15, with more than 10 prospects from the 2019 and 2020 classes joining them. A visitor list that loaded results in us having to deliver two recruiting previews. This time we will focus on the defensive side of the ball, where Nebraska is expecting to host 18 offered prospects from the 2018 class.

Committed Prospects

Masry Mapieu – Defensive Tackle

Nebraska only has one commitment for the defensive side of the ball entering the spring game, as Masry Mapieu has been a part of the Nebraska class since June 2016. Mapieu earned all-state honors as a junior for York High, as he helped lead the Dukes to a 7-3 record in 2016.

Uncommitted Prospects

Isaac Taylor-Stuart – Cornerback, 33 FBS Offers

One of the top cornerback prospects in the nation will be in Lincoln Saturday, as Isaac Taylor-Stuart announced his intentions to visit Nebraska via Twitter.

Taylor-Stuart currently has 33 FBS offers, including tenders from Alabama, Michigan and USC. Nebraska will be his first unofficial visit this spring, though he did visit and name Alabama his leader last summer.

Chance of Committing This Weekend: 5%

Brendan Radley-Hiles – Cornerback, 36 FBS Offers

One of Nebraska’s top targets for the 2018 class is Brendan “Bookie” Radley-Hiles, a cornerback prospect who attended Calabasas High as a junior. Radley-Hiles emerged as a popular recruit among Husker fans last summer and he has been considered a Husker lean since his cousin Tyjon Lindsey signed with Nebraska in February. Radley-Hiles has been very complementary of Nebraska on twitter and with his new teammates at IMG Academy. Landing him would give Nebraska a tremendous recruiting ambassador for the 2018 class. Radley-Hiles is planning to announce his college decision on July 31.

Chance of Committing This Weekend: 0%

Olaijah Griffin – Cornerback, 12 FBS offers

Dante Williams was regarded as one of the best recruiters in the country when he arrived at Nebraska, with him holding considerable esteem in the state of California. He has proven that this wasn’t a myth in the 2018 class, convincing several California defensive back prospects to visit for the spring game. One of those California prospects is Olaijah Griffin, a 6-0, 170-pound prospect out of Mission Viejo. Griffin currently holds 12 FBS offers, including tenders from USC, UCLA and Oregon. USC is considered the leader for Griffen at this point, but this is a tremendous opportunity for the Huskers to make up some ground for the talented prospect.

Chance of Committing This Weekend: 5%

Mario Goodrich – Cornerback, 13 FBS Offers

Nebraska secured a major recruiting victory when Mario Goodrich, one of the top prospects in the 500-mile radius, scheduled an unofficial visit to Nebraska for this weekend. Goodrich has been considered a Nebraska lean since he visited Nebraska last fall for the Minnesota game, and he finally received a Nebraska offer on January 18. The Nebraska offer came right before Goodrich’s recruiting stock took off, as Minnesota, Michigan and Ole Miss soon followed with offers. Nebraska is expected to take as many as five defensive backs in the 2018 class, and it would not surprise me if Goodrich was the first one to join.

Chance of Committing This Weekend: 60%

Stephan Blaylock – Cornerback, 6 FBS Offers

Nebraska joined the chase for an intriguing sleeper in Stephan Blaylock last month, and its early work paid off in Blaylock scheduling his first spring visit to Lincoln. Blaylock, who attends California powerhouse St. John Bosco, currently holds six FBS offers including tenders from BYU, Oregon and UCLA.

Chance of Committing This Weekend: 10%

Steve Stephens – Safety, 12 FBS Offers

Nebraska is attempting to tap into the fertile Fresno area with Steve Stephens, one of the top safety prospects in the country. Stephens currently holds 12 FBS offers, including tenders from Oklahoma, USC and Oregon. Nebraska is considered on the outside looking in for Stephens, as it will need to make up some ground on Stephens’ longtime favorite, Oklahoma.

Chance of Committing This Weekend: 5%

Talanoa Hufanga – Safety, 14 FBS Offers

Can Mike Riley land a prospect from his old stomping grounds? That will be the question when Talanoa Hufanga comes to Lincoln this weekend. Hufanga, considered by some to be the best athlete prospect in the nation, received his Nebraska offer on January 22nd, with Nebraska joining Oregon, Oregon State and Notre Dame in the chase for the talented player. Nebraska will be Hufanga’s first unofficial visit this spring.

Chance of Committing This Weekend: 20%

Jordan Moore – Safety, Currently Committed to Texas A&M

Could Nebraska hit the daily double with the Moore twins? That will be the question when Joshua and Jordan Moore take in Lincoln this weekend. Jordan has been committed to Texas A&M since Christmas Eve of 2016, but that did not stop Nebraska from offering the talented safety on February 26. Nebraska’s offer seems to have paid off, as Moore will be in Lincoln for the spring game. As a junior, Moore tallied an incredible 11 interceptions for Yoakum High School, helping lead the Bulldogs to an 11-5 record in 2016.

Chance of Committing This Weekend: 10%

Nikko Hall – Safety, 15 FBS Offers

Nebraska will attempt to keep its Calabasas pipeline running in 2018, as it will be hosting a pair of Calabasas teammates in Nikko Hall and Reggie Hughes. Hall, who is being recruited by Nebraska as a safety, was planning to announce his commitment on April 8, but postponed his decision until after his visit to Nebraska this weekend. That can only be seen as a good sign for Nebraska, as it will get the last chance to impress Hall prior to his decision.

Chance of Committing This Weekend:20%

Reggie Hughes – Outside Linebacker, 8 FBS Offers

Nebraska’s new 3-4 scheme has a need for dynamic outside linebackers that can rush the passer, and Reggie Hughes fits that mold perfectly. Hughes, who tallied more than 15 sacks for Calabasas High as a junior, currently holds 8 FBS offers, with Nebraska and UCLA considered the top schools in the hunt for him. The Bruins are considered the early leader for Hughes right now, but the Huskers will have a chance to make up some ground with a strong visit this weekend.

Chance of Committing This Weekend: 15%

Draco Bynum – Defensive End, 16 FBS Offers

Nebraska will get a chance to host one of the top defensive line prospects on the West Coast this weekend, as Draco Bynum will be making the trek to Lincoln for the spring game. Bynum, who hails from Riley’s old stomping grounds of Oregon, currently holds 16 FBS offers, including tenders from Washington and Oregon. The Huskies are considered the top school for Bynum at this point following his unofficial visit to Seattle on April 8. While they may trail at the moment, Nebraska and John Parrella will have a tremendous opportunity to make up some ground this Saturday.

Chance of Committing This Weekend: 10%

Daniel Carson – Defensive End, 18 FBS Offers

Missouri is absolutely stacked with defensive line talent in the 2018 class, and one of the best will head to Lincoln this weekend. Daniel Carson, a 6-5, 260-pound prospect out of Independence, Mo., will be taking his second unofficial visit of the spring to Lincoln. Carson currently holds 18 FBS offers, with Ohio State and Oklahoma considered his early leaders at this point. As a junior, Carson tallied 56 tackles and 13 sacks while helping lead William Chrisman High to an 8-2 record in 2016.

Chance of Committing This Weekend: 10%

Ronnie Perkins – Defensive End, 28 FBS Offers

Nebraska joined the chase for Ronnie Perkins on March 6 of this year; then the Huskers watched as Perkins stock went through the roof following dominant performances at various spring football camps. Perkins, who currently holds 28 offers, has already taken one unofficial visit this spring to Minnesota, and he has an early group of leaders that includes Oklahoma, LSU, Michigan and Missouri. Landing Perkins would be a massive coup for Nebraska, as he has emerged as arguably the top defensive line prospect in the Midwest in recent weeks.

Chance of Committing This Weekend: 10%

Jalen Redmond – Defensive End, 13 FBS Offers

Last year Nebraska swiped the top defensive lineman in the state of Oklahoma away from the Sooners when it landed Deontre Thomas; now the Huskers will try to do it again with Jalen Redmond, an impressive prospect from Oklahoma City. Redmond, who currently holds 13 FBS offers, including tenders from Oklahoma, Arizona State and Arkansas, will be taking his third unofficial visit of the spring to Nebraska, as he has already taken visits to Oklahoma and TCU in the past two weeks. As a junior, Redmond tallied 81 tackles and 16 sacks while helping lead Midwest City High to a 7-4 record in 2016.

Calvin Avery – Defensive Tackle, 18 FBS Offers

Nebraska landed a nose tackle from Bishop Dunne in 2017 when it landed Damion Daniels; now the Husker coaches will look to go back to that well again with Calvin Avery in 2018. Avery, who took in Nebraska’s last spring game in 2016, currently holds 18 offers, with Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas A&M considered the early favorites for him. As a junior, Avery tallied 68 tackles, 18 tackles for a loss and 12 sacks while helping lead the Falcons to an appearance in the state finals.

Chance of Committing This Weekend: 20%

Josh Walker – Defensive Tackle, 18 FBS Offers

Nebraska continues to try to build a pipeline to IMG Academy, one of the top talent producers in the nation. One of the top members of IMG’s 2018 class is Josh Walker, a 6-2, 285-pound defensive tackle prospect. Walker, who currently holds 18 FBS offers, recently released his top list of schools, with Nebraska joining UCLA, Notre Dame and others in his final group. This could be the surprise commit of the weekend, as Nebraska has quietly been after  Walker for almost five months now, and its hard work just might be rewarded.
