Last week in the recruiting notebook, I took a look at a handful of position groups that Nebraska needs to hit out of the park in the 2020 recruiting class. I now want to take a deeper dive into some players to watch at those positions. First up was the defensive line. Today we look at the wide receivers.
The Huskers already have one big-time wide receiver in the class: high 4-star Zavier Betts. He joined the class back in early April. Betts can do it all. The Bellevue West star has great size, speed and hands. While he is a great start to pass catching group for the class of 2020, at least two more will be needed. Who could be some of those targets?
Let’s first start the most obvious name and player who may be nearing a decision: Xavier Watts. The Omaha Burke standout is very talented in his own right but if the Huskers land him it would mean even more because of the emphasis that Coach Scott Frost and inside linebackers coach Barrett Ruud have placed on keeping talented players in-state. The Huskers are locked in a tight battle with Notre Dame and are awaiting his decision.
Two other players to keep in mind recently took official visits to Lincoln on the same weekend. Ajou Ajou, a 3-star from Clearwater, Florida, was in Lincoln a couple of weeks ago. It’s been hard to get a read on just how well that visit went for Ajou but sources indicate Nebraska is in the thick of things for him. Standing at 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, he is an impressive looking prospect with high upside.
Another player that was in Lincoln for an official visit that same weekend was Kilgore Community College wide receiver Omar Manning. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound player has emerged as a top target for Nebraska staff. He is a player that could could come in right away next season and compete for serious playing time. Manning rated his visit to Lincoln very high. Now we just have to see if he ends up taking other trips throughout this season.
Of course, there will be other targets to emerge for the Huskers in this class. There are other known names at this point to keep an eye on too. Brenden Rice is a player the Huskers would love to host before he decides. Will Nixon came to Lincoln for an unofficial visit. We also need to see if any other Wan’Dale Robinson-types emerge for the Duck-R role in this class.
Offensive coordinator and wide recievers coach Troy Walters has no shortage of options to add to his room and this group will be a focus all cycle.
*Update* Xavier Watts committed to Notre Dame on Friday.
