Tracking Nebraska During Week 1 of Recruiting Contact Period

December 05, 2019

We are in full swing of the contact period. The Nebraska coaching staff is out on the road in search for the next crop of Huskers as Coach Scott Frost tries to get the program off the ground. We only get two full weeks of coaching visits and two weekends for official visits this recruiting cycle.

Time is of the essence as Nebraska looks to round out a class that has a good start but still needs more players.

So, where is the staff heading this week? I’ll update this space each day as Hail Varsity learns more.

Sunday Update

>> Offensive line coach Greg Austin was in Lawrence, Kansas, to see the team’s top-rated recruit, Turner Corcoran. The lineman is all set to sign on Dec. 18 and early enroll next month.

>> Defensive coordinator Erik Chinander was in Iowa to see outside linebacker commit Blaise Gunnerson. The defender told Hail Varsity that his plans have changed and he will be enrolling early next month. That’s a huge development for Nebraska as he plays a position of need.

>> Frost went to Oklahoma along with running backs coach Ryan Held and quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco to see running back commit Sevion Morrison.

>> After visiting with Morrison, Frost and Verduzco went down to Alabama to visit with longtime quarterback commit Logan Smothers. The dual-threat quarterback had a sensational senior season which was ended abruptly by injury. He’ll be fine long-term and is ready to get to Lincoln.

>> Defensive line coach Tony Tuioti visited with junior college defensive tackle Jordon Riley. The North Carolina bounce back has been at Garden City Community College but is originally from Durham, North Carolina. The Huskers offered him after visiting him in person.

Monday update

>> Recent Huskers JUCO linebacker commit Jamoi Hodge took an official visit to SMU over the weekend. Hodge confirmed that the trip had already been set up prior to his commitment to Nebraska and he wanted to keep the visit on the books. He informed Hail Varsity that he’s done with any visits and is solid with the Huskers. Chinander is scheduled to see him Monday morning.

>> Huskers defensive back commit Tamon Lynum informed Hail Varsity that defensive backs coach Travis Fisher will be stopping by to visit him on Monday.

>> Keep an eye on recent Missouri decommit Javian Hester‍. The big-bodied receiver (6-3, 190) told me that he will “definitely” visit Nebraska now that Barry Odom has been fired. He is close with running back commit Sevion Morrison.

>> Ooffensive coordinator Troy Walters was in Conneticut on Sunday night to see prep school wide receiver Alante Brown‍. The speedy receiver (5-10, 181) attends St. Thomas More and is originally from Chicago. Brown told Hail Varsity that he will be taking an official visit to Nebraska this weekend.

>> I was able to reach defensive tackle commit Marquis Black on Monday evening who told me that the staff will be by to see him next week. Presumably, they will do his in-home visit on the same evening they stop in to see his teammate 4-star wide receiver Justin Robinson.

>> Kaden Johnson is arguably the Huskers No.1 defensive target remaining on the board. I exchanged a few texts with him on Monday and he told me that outside linebackers coach Jovan Dewitt was at his house Sunday as soon as the contact period opened up. Frost plans to go in-home with him next week. Johnson is hoping to sign in December.

>> The visit that Tamon Lynum told Hail Varsity about has happened. He is all set to arrive in Lincoln next month after signing on Dec. 18.

Tuesday Update

>> Inside linebackers coach Barrett Ruud stopped into to see recent JUCO inside linebacker offer Eteva Mauga on Sunday.

After speaking with Coach Darr at Diablo Valley College, I can confirm that Mauga will be visiting Lincoln this weekend for an official visit. Darr told me that Mauga’s burst and motor are as good as he’s seen in 24 years of coaching at the JUCO level. Mauga is originally from American Samoa and was the JUCO player of the year in a tough conference. He will be a midyear transfer with three years to play 2 seasons.

It’s hard to find hidden gems in recruiting these days but Mauga is a player to be very intrigued by.

>> Outside linebackers coach Jovan Dewitt was down in Texas to see JUCO pass rusher DeVere Levelston. The fast-rising prospect will take an official visit to Illinois this week.

>> Florida State commit, 4-star outside linebacker Keyshawn Greene, told me that the Huskers will be by to see him today. There are multiple Nebraska coaches in the Florida panhandle today that could see him. Florida State still doesn’t have a coach so it seems likely the Huskers will push to get a visit this weekend.

>> I caught up with wide receiver/running back commit Will Nixon who said that wide receivers coach Troy Walters is expected to come see him on Wednesday. The versatile playmaker is expecting Frost to come in-home in January. Nixon says he will be signing this month.

>> The Huskers have a few big-time defensive players on the hook that they are in the hunt with as early signing approaches. One is 4-star cornerback Darion Green-Warren. The defender told Hail Varsity that Tuioti was by his house on Monday night. He also said that Frost and Fisher are doing their in-home visits next week. Green-Warren plans to sign in December but keep it under wraps until the All-America Game in January like Noa Pola-Gates did last year. He will be an early enrolle.

>> We have confirmed another official visitor for this weekend. Recent Tennessee commit Jimari Butler informed Hail Varsity that he will be taking an official visit to Lincoln this weekend with his mom. The pass rushing outside linebacker (6-5, 217) was a fast riser during senior film evaluations. Right now, Butler says that is signing in February. He is a summer enrollee.

>> On Sunday, Frost and Verduzco were in to see quarterback commit Logan Smothers. In talking with his dad Shane, it sounds like the visit could not have gone better. In fact, the Smothers’ treated the coaches to an incredible home cooked meal featuring fried okra, crowder peas, green beans, collard greens from Logan’s 90-year old great-grandparents garden. Smoked tenderloin, smoked chicken and a Boston butt. They also feasted on baked mac and cheese, twice bake potatoes. There was some peach cobbler and vanilla ice cream to complete the meal of course.

Now I’m hungry.

Wednesday Update

>> Newly offered Garden City defensive tackle Jordon Riley announced on Twitter that he will be taking an official visit this weekend. The North Carolina bounce back (6-6, 295) got a visit from Tuioti on the first day of the contact period.

>> Cross one linebacker off the list for the Huskers. Maryland commit Ruben Hyppolite told me that he is no longer talking with Nebraska or any other team. He will be sticking with his Maryland commitment.

>> Huskers offensive line commit Alex Conn informed Hail Varsity that Austin has been by to see him this week. After that, Austin was in Illinois on Tuesday where a number of new future offers went out for the Huskers.

>> Scott Frost has a huge in-home visit lined up on Wednesday. Colorado commit and recent official visitor defensive end Julius Coates has informed Hail Varsity that Frost is coming to see him today. The Huskers have great momentum with Coates who has expressed an interest in playing closer to his home state of Illinois. This visit by Frost, Chinander and Held could seal the deal for Nebraska.

>> Georgia pass rusher Jared Ivey received an in-home visit tonight from Frost, Chinander and Beckton. He took his official visit to Lincoln back in September.

Thursday Update

> > Late Wednesday night, 3-star defensive end target Nusi Malani posted a photo to Twitter thanking defensive line coach Tony Tuioti for coming by the house for an in-home visit.

Malani visited Nebraska for an official visit for the Northern Illinois game early in the season. He is undecided on signing in December or February at this time.

>> Today is a huge day for Scott Frost and Sean Beckton as they are scheduled to see 4-star wide receiver Justin Robinson who is committed to Georgia. The Bulldogs have made a push to keep him in the class but the Huskers will continue selling opportinity. It also helps that his family liked his official visit to Nebraska and he has a teammate, Marquis Black committed to Nebraska.

>> In a surprising move, recent JUCO linebacker commit Jamoi Hodge has left the Huskers recruiting class.

The North Carolina native played last season at Independence Community College. He took an official visit to Arizona before committing to Nebraska and an official to SMU last weekend. It’s unclear at this time which party initiated the decommit.

>> Got another message from offensive line commit Alex Conn who tells me that his meeting with Greg Austin went well this week. Conn also said that the plan is for him to sign in December.
