What Chris Hickman Means to Nebraska’s 2019 Recruiting Class

December 19, 2018

On Wednesday, 4-star (HV Rating: 90.3) tight end Chris Hickman‍ signed his letter of intent to play for Nebraska.

The Omaha Burke star committed back on Sept. 15 representing a significant recruiting win for Nebraska’s new staff. The dynamic athlete fits very well into what coach Scott Frost and tight end coach Sean Beckton want in their tight ends. Hickman is a matchup nightmare when running routes and is a willing blocker.

When Frost had his introductory press conference last December, he made it clear that he wanted to keep the best players in the state home.

"When I was growing up, every kid in the state of Nebraska dreamed about running out here on this stadium, on this field wearing a red ‘N’ on their helmet," Frost said at the time. "There’s too many kids from this state right now playing at other schools and we are going to do everything we can to make sure that those kids are here.”

Hickman was considered least likely to choose Nebraska of the five sure-fire Power 5 players in the state this year. Lead in-state recruiter Barrett Ruud and Beckton deserve a lot of praise for building a relationship with Hickman that made him feel comfortable selecting Nebraska. Peer recruiting played a role here too as Hickman was very comfortable with the group of guys coming into Nebraska this season.

Getting Hickman’s commitment early meant the Huskers could shut things down at the tight end position for 2019. He will be on campus in January for the spring semester as an early enrollee. That means he will be able to get in the weight room with Zach Duval and set up with a nutrition plan with Dave Ellis to start adding to his frame.
