What to Expect From Early Signing Period

December 18, 2017

There has been some confusion with the quiet period, dead period and the inaugural early signing period so let’s walk through that, then take a look at which players Nebraska can expect to sign early.

Yesterday began an NCAA mandated "quiet period," meaning no face-to-face contact is allowed unless it is initiated by the recruits. In other words, the kids that came to campus were good.

The "dead period" began at midnight Monday and runs through Jan. 11. During the dead period, a college coach may not have face-to-face contact with college-bound student-athletes or their parents, and may not watch student-athletes compete or visit their high schools. Coaches may write and telephone student-athletes or their parents during a dead period. On a related note, I suspect not many coaches are writing to recruits but that does cover the big bundle of mail with hand-written cards that recruits often get from prospective colleges.

The new early signing period runs from Dec 20 to 22. The regular national signing day is on Feb. 7. Nebraska has the potential to sign double-digit players on Wednesday when the signing period opens at 7am central time.

Current commits who will sign Wednesday with Nebraska

4-star TE Cameron Jurgens

4-star QB Adrian Martinez

3-star DE Tate Wildeman

3-star LB David Alston

3-star DB Deontai Williams

3-star WR Justin McGriff

3-star OL Will Farniok

2-star K Barret Pickering

Current commits who will sign Wednesday with a school

4-star WR Cameron Brown‍ (likely with Ohio State)

3-star WR Jaron Woodyard‍ (visited Tennessee last weekend)

Current commit undecided on signing early

4-star DB C.J. Smith‍

Targets who may sign early

3-star WR Jeshaun Jones

3-star RB Greg Bell

4-star ATH Marcus Riley‍ (Louisville commit)

3-star LB Will Honas

4-star S Cam Jones

3-star TE Katerian Legrone

3-star TE Messiah Swinson

Just because a player signs during the early signing period, doesn’t mean he is enrolling early. Currently Nebraska expects Martinez, Williams, Woodyard, McGriff, Farniok and Pickering to enroll early. There are a couple of targets the staff hopes to have sign with them that plan on enrolling early as well.
