After an offseason making all the right moves and saying all the right phrases, it turned out there was an opponent Scott Frost couldn't beat –– the weather. You could be forgiven if you forgot while Central Florida sped to a 13-0 record in 2017 and this staff then brought that remarkable momentum straight to Lincoln.
But if you came away disappointed from Nebraska's season opener that wasn't, know that the athletic department shared in your sorrow.
"Everyone associated with last night’s season opener is disappointed that the weather did not cooperate, and we were unable to play the game," Nebraska Athletic Director Bill Moos said in a statement released Sunday. "We were dealing with a fluid situation, and at all times we were operating with public safety as our number one concern.
“During the delay, there were numerous scenarios discussed for contingency plans for playing the game, including a scenario to play the game on Sunday. Unfortunately, Akron faced some logistical challenges and the decision was made to cancel the game."
The cancelation was the first at Nebraska since a 1943 game against Pittsburgh in Lincoln was canceled due to travel restrictions around World War II. Frost, however, had recent experience with a cancelation. The Knights were scheduled to host Georgia Tech on Sept. 16 of last year, but the game was called five days prior to kickoff due to complications from Hurricane Irma.
Nebraska has yet to determine if it will look to add a 12th game. The Huskers' open date falls on Oct. 27.
“Regarding any potential additions or adjustments to the 2018 football schedule, we will explore and discuss those options in the coming weeks," Moos said. "In the meantime, fans are encouraged to hold onto their tickets from last night’s game in the event a game were to be added later in the season.
“At this point, everyone’s focus and attention has moved onto preparation for opening our season against Colorado on Saturday afternoon.”
The Huskers and Buffaloes renew their Big Eight rivalry Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Lincoln. The game will be telecast by ABC.
