“I’m extremely excited and humbled to have the opportunity to carry on the strong tradition that has been associated with the voices of Nebraska football,” Benning said. “It’s extra special because this week marked my dad’s 86th birthday. He was a season-ticket holder who introduced me to Nebraska football and my best friend.”
Another former Husker, Matt Davison, announced on the broadcast shortly before Nebraska’s 14-13 win over Rutgers that, after 17 years in the booth, he was calling his last game. Davison, also a senior associate athletic director at Nebraska, recently announced he is stepping away from the athletic department and launching a new NIL collective, the 1890 Initiative, that will aid Husker football and volleyball players.
Benning was a four-year letter winner at running back for the Huskers, rushing for 1,562 yards and gaining 2,625 all-purpose yards. As a senior in 1996, Benning earned honorable mention All-Big 12 and was a Doak Walker Award nominee. He signed a free-agent deal with the Carolina Panthers in 1997.
Over the past decade, Benning has made his name in local media, co-hosting a popular morning radio show in Omaha, making regular appearances on Nebraska Public Media’s “Big Red Wrap-Up” and providing commentary on BTN broadcasts and NPM’s coverage of the state football championships at Memorial Stadium.
Last week, Hurrdat Media announced that Benning was joining the staff to provide local sports fans his signature analysis and commentary across multiple platforms. Hail Varsity, covering Nebraska athletics since 2012, is owned by Hurrdat.
