Does Nebraska Need a Rival?

October 24, 2016

Who is Nebraska’s rival now? The answer to that question often depends on which generation of Husker fan is giving the answer.

For some it will always and forever be Oklahoma, even though any future meetings between the two plains powerhouses will be a matter of circumstance or special scheduling. Some might say Colorado. That was good for about a decade. Missouri deserves some consideration. Texas, too.

Viewed that way, Nebraska has rivals in the Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC, and that’s before you even get to the Huskers’ current conference. Wisconsin? Iowa? Heck, Michigan State given the way that series has gone since Nebraska joined the conference?

It’s hard to find another school in college football with such a shifting sense of rivalry. We explore that rare position and what it means in the latest issue of Hail Varsity.

For our cover, we looked to one of the all-time classics for inspiration: The “Irresistible Oklahoma Meets Immovable Nebraska” Sports Illustrated cover from Nov. 22, 1971.

Other highlights from this issue include:

>>Staff writer Jacob Padilla takes you inside one of the great Nebraska traditions, the weekly Husker skull session at Holy Ghost Parish in Omaha, which is still going strong after more than 40 years.

>>Online editor and director of digital marketing Erin Sorensen introduces you to Lyndsay Lee in our latest Hail to the Fan.

>>Staff writer Jake Jensen keeps you up to date on all the latest from the recruiting trail, where Nebraska is attempting to put together its best class in more than a decade.

>>Editor Mike Babcock takes you a little deeper inside the Nebraska-Oklahoma rivalry, catches up with former Husker Roger Fitzke and, as a hobbled Nebraska teams heads into its two biggest games of the season, writes that it’s never wise to take anything for granted, including Husker losses in either of those games.

>>As always, we’ve got the latest game photos from the Huskers’ football wins over the Indiana schools and Nebraska volleyball’s pair of top-five victories over Wisconsin and Minnesota.
