“This is always hump week.”
That’s how defensive coordinator Erik Chinander described this week, the week before Nebraska starts game prep for South Alabama. It would make sense if players were dragging a bit at this point, but that’s not what the Huskers saw on Monday.
“Guys came out laughing and smiling, wanting to play football, a lot of energy,” Chinander said following Monday’s practice. “I didn’t see any ‘mush faces’ out there. I didnt see any gloomy Guses. I didn’t see any of that.
“Credit to Coach [Scott] Frost, the culture on the team is—I don’t know if it’s where he wants it—much, much better. These kids love playing football and they love Nebraska and they’re happy to go to work.
Nebraska scrimmaged on Friday inside Memorial Stadium, and Chinander liked most of what he saw. There were still some mental errors, but it’s nothing Chinander is worrying too much about because of the team’s approach through fall camp.
“There hasn’t been one day where I’ve been disappointed in the energy of the team,” Chinander said. "We definitely got a lot of things to work on. We're not there, but the energy's good."
More news and notes:
>> Nebraska’s 2019 alternate uniforms have been unveiled. The Huskers shared the Blackshirts-inspired uniforms on Monday. Chinander has yet to see the uniforms beyond a leaked photo that made the rounds on Twitter last week, but he’s excited about them.
“I haven’t seen them up close yet but I think it’s pretty cool,” Chinander said. “It’s pretty cool that Coach Frost has embraced that tradition. I don’t know when we’re wearing them or if we’re wearing them or what’s going to happen, but I think it’s pretty cool.”
>> Nebraska is ranked in the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2016. In the Poll that was released Monday morning, the Huskers came in at No. 24.
“I think it's cool because of the way the program is perceived and it’s great because of how Coach [Scott] Frost is perceived but we haven’t done anything yet,” Chinander said following Monday’s practice. “I just assumed we weren’t ranked. I hope none of those guys think that they’ve made it because we certainly haven’t.
“As I said last time, we’re a 4-8 football team until we get into the season. Ranking 24th don't mean diddly to me.”
>> JoJo Domann is still limited on the number of reps he can take, but things are improving. The junior was originally left off the fall camp 110-man roster due to a lingering injury from the summer, but he’s getting back to it.
“We threw him in a couple days ago and there was no let off from the spring,” Chinander said.
>> Jahkeem Green was in full pads on Monday. He’s been working exclusively at left end, alongside Carlos Davis and Deontre Thomas.
>> We could type this quote out, but it’s probably just better if you watch it for yourself.
