Hot Reads: Let the Quarterback Games Begin

January 03, 2017

New year, new quarterback. At least that’s how the Nebraska Huskers are having to approach 2017. With the departure of veteran quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr., the Huskers are now seeking his replacement. Who will it be?

According to Brian Christopherson of the Lincoln Journal Star, the competition between quarterbacks Tanner Lee, Patrick O’Brien and even incoming Tristan Gebbia is already underway. While the dates are fuzzy according to offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf, the competition has been ongoing for some time now. That includes previous Sunday scrimmages and all of the bowl game preparation.

Talk about a new day at Nebraska. Armstrong and former quarterback Taylor Martinez had been at the helm of Husker football since 2010 with very little competition against either. That means 2017 will provide something very new for Nebraska as it looks for its quarterback replacement.

The exciting part of all of this is that it will truly be a competition between Lee, O’Brien and Gebbia. While Lee appears to be an early favorite (at least among fans), the job still isn’t his. He does have the experience at the collegiate level, having started 19 times over his two years at Tulane. As a sophomore, he completed 55.8 percent of his passes and threw for 12 touchdowns. The downside? He also threw 14 interceptions.

Neither O’Brien nor Gebbia have any experience starting in college football, but Lee’s Tulane numbers provide both a fair shot for both at taking the job. As Christopherson pointed out, Langsdorf plans to have all three heavily evaluated this spring. That means taking a hard look at each in the weight room, through spring ball and the entire offseason.

There likely won’t be an answer to Nebraska’s quarterback situation this spring. Husker fans probably won’t know what will happen until next August. It’s possible it won’t even be clear until Nebraska takes the field to face Arkansas State on Saturday, Sept. 2.

Until then, Husker fans will be treated to a good ol’ fashioned quarterback competition. With that said, let the speculation commence.

The Grab Bag

>> Land of 10 is reporting that Ohio State will make some changes to its coaching staff now that the offseason has arrived. That change? Co-offensive coordinator Tim Beck is leaving to join the new Texas staff.

>> Duke’s Coach K is planning to have back surgery, which is creating a bit of uncertainty for the Blue Devils. The coach’s health is first and foremost though, so assistant Jeff Capel will be taking over in his absence.

>> About the Rose Bowl… Not bad, huh?

>> Lane Kiffin is leaving Alabama before the national title game, which is a bit interesting. Considering both he and Nick Saban said he’d stay through the playoffs, it’s a twist to Kiffin’s end with the Tide.
