Nebraska’s Reimer Out, Newsome Warming Up For Purdue Clash

October 15, 2022

Nebraska coaches, players and staff came off the buses and through the gates at Purdue to the acclaim of traveling fans. The Huskers’ latest business trip, this one to Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette, Indiana, involves a potent Purdue team.

The Huskers (3-3, 2-1 Big Ten) could achieve a winning record for the first time this season with a win against Purdue, who rides a three-game winning streak coming into Saturday night’s game. It’s a mid-October clash with conference and bowl implications.

Both teams come into the game with injury questions. Nebraska interim head coach Mickey Joseph said earlier this week that cornerback Quinton Newsome and linebacker Luke Reimer were planned to travel with the team but be game-time decisions. Reimer did not dress. Punter Brian Buschini’s health status wasn’t questioned during the week after punting into an oncoming helmet during the Rutgers game. He hobbled, clearly bothered by the injury, the rest of that game. Buschini was the first out in full pads for warmups and punted with his normal prep and one-step drop. Receiver Omar Manning did not travel after suffering a foot injury against Rutgers.

Purdue, meanwhile, is even more short-staffed. In media availability this week, head coach Jeff Brohm said running back Dylan Downing, defensive back Chris Jefferson, receiver Broc Thompson, defensive back O.C. Brothers and offensive linemen Daniel Johnson and Cam Craig won’t dress today. Running back King Doerue, out for the last four games, is a game-time decision. Top receiver Charlie Jones did not practice on Tuesday but returned to the field later in the week and Brohm indicated he’ll play. Brohm also mentioned during the week that Boilermakers only have six available linemen that coaches feel comfortable with.

Here are some other notable items in the run up to Saturday night’s game:

>> Nebraska activities director Trev Alberts and chancellor Ronnie Green both made the trip to West Lafayette. Alberts mingled on the sidelines during warmups.

>> The offense, led by quarterback Casey Thompson, jogged a lap together in warmups. That included running backs, receivers and linemen.

>> Tommi Hill moved back to work with the defensive backs in warmups to fill a thin secondary.

>> Temperatures on the field plummeted in the hour leading into warmups. A slight breeze is blowing into Ross-Ade Stadium from its exposed southern end.

>> Purdue has won three of the last five meetings between the two programs, including last year’s 28-23 win in Lincoln. Nebraska secured a 37-27 win in 2020, the last time the two teams met in West Lafeyette.

>> Tonight’s game is sold out, marking the sixth consecutive game the Huskers played this season that sold out. All home games this year, as well as last week’s game at Rutgers, sold all available tickets.

>> Representatives from the Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts are present for tonight’s game. Representatives from the Hula Bowl are also present.

>> Nebraska and Purdue are tied in the Big Ten West standings. A win in the morning game gives Illinois sole possession of first for the moment while the winner between the Huskers and Boilermakers will join them.

>> Saturday’s game is the first for Damon Benning doing color commentary on the Husker Sports Network. He takes over for Matt Davison, who will head the 1890 Initiative, a new NIL firm.
