Huskers Hire Bob Elliott as New Safeties Coach

February 13, 2017

Mike Riley made the hire of Bob Elliott official on Monday, announcing Elliot’s new role as Nebraska’s safeties coach. Elliott brings 38 years of coaching experience to the Huskers and was most recently at Notre Dame.

“Bob Elliott has great respect throughout football for his defensive
knowledge and ability as a coach, teacher and recruiter,” Riley said in a press release.
“The experience he brings to our staff will be a great asset as we
install a new defensive system and build toward the future success of
the Blackshirts.”

Elliott is familiar with at least one member of Nebraska’s staff, having previously worked with defensive coordinator Bob Diaco at Notre Dame in 2012 and 2013. As for his new role with the Huskers, Elliott is looking forward to working with Riley and the Blackshirts.

“I have been very fortunate throughout my career to work at outstanding
universities and with great coaches,” Elliott said. “The opportunity to
work under Coach Riley is an unbelievable honor. His reputation in the
coaching profession is second to none. When you couple that with working
in a program with the tradition and history of success of Nebraska, I
couldn’t be more excited.”

Having spent 32 of his 36 on-field seasons coaching defense, Elliott is prepared to take on Nebraska’s safeties. While coaching the safeties for Notre Dame in 2012 and 2013, with Diaco as defensive coordinator in 2013, he was a part of coaching a unit that ranked 15th in the FBS ranks in passing yards allowed per game, 16th in yards allowed per completion and 17th in yards per attempt. He also helped lead Notre Dame to a 12-0 regular season and the BCS National Championship Game in 2012.

For additional thoughts on Elliott, we shared three of them here.
