Huskers WR Manning Makes the Trip to Northwestern, More Roster Updates

November 07, 2020

Nebraska is back on the field after a nobody-wanted-it week off. Like the last time out for the Huskers, a 52-17 loss at Ohio State on Oct. 24, a travel roster wasn’t part of the picture an hour before game time, but staff writer Derek Peterson is in Evanston ahead of the Northwestern game.

Same observations from warmups:

>>Wide receiver Omar Manning was on the field for the Huskers pregame. The top junior college receiver nationally in the 2020 recruiting, dealt with some injuries through fall camp and did not make the trip to Columbus.

Coach Scott Frost said Manning was “ready to play” on Thursday and it looks like he indeed will be available for Nebraska on Saturday.

Manning may not be the only young wide receiver with a role against Northwestern. True freshmen Zavier Betts, Marcus Fleming and Alante Brown also were on the field in warmups.

“I think the young receivers are coming along,” Frost said. “I think Coach (Matt) Lubick’s doing a good job bringing them along. For a bunch of different reasons, I think they all got set back a little bit, whether it was a virus or an injury or an absence, but they’re getting close.”

>>Center Cam Jurgens was not part of non-padded warmups with the other four starting linemen. The sophomore got dinged up against Ohio State, but he wasn’t publicly ruled out for the game this week.

>>Wide receivers Kade Warner, Marcus Fleming and Wan’Dale Robinson were working at punt returner in pregame drills along with defensive back Cam Taylor-Britt.

Taylor-Britt and starting safety Deontai Williams will have to sit out the first half due to targeting penalties against Ohio State. Quinton Newsome (corner) and Myles Farmer (safety) were there likely replacements.

“I’ve got a lot of confidence in the guys we’re going to play week-to-week,” defensive backs coach Travis Fisher said this week.

>>Inside Luke Reimer made the trip to Evanston after missing Nebraska’s opener. ““It helps (getting him back),” Frost said. “That’s one spot where we don’t have a ton of depth, so we have to stay healthy. It’ll be nice to rotate those guys and have several good players that can go in.”

>>Tight end Jack Stoll was not dressed for the game after getting injured at Ohio State. The Huskers had Austin Allen, Kurt Rafdal, Travis Vokolek and Jared Bubak.

>>Running back Ronald Thompkins did not make the trip.

>>The forecast for today was for near picture-perfect weather considering its November next to the lake. So far, so good . . .
