It was reported earlier Sunday that Westerkamp would join
the Dolphins, who waived linebacker Lamin Barrow to open up the necessary
roster spot.
In four seasons with Nebraska, Westerkamp’s receiving game
on the field was just as good as his facial hair game off it. The Lombard,
Illinois, native was a mainstay in the Nebraska receiving corps from the time
he was a freshman.
Earning All-Freshman Big Ten honors in 2013 and seeing his
name on at least one All-Big Ten team in 2015 and 2016, Westerkamp ranks in the
top five all-time at Nebraska for numerous receiving marks. He sits at second
in career catches (167), 100-yard games (eight) and consecutive games with a catch
(36). He also ranks fourth in receiving touchdowns (18) and yards (2,474).
Westerkamp went undrafted in the 2017 NFL Draft but earned a
tryout with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That tryout went unfulfilled as
Westerkamp left without a contract, but the patience seems to have paid off.
Westerkamp will join a Dolphins squad with five of 10
receivers having less than two years of NFL experience. Miami will begin its
preseason play on Aug. 10 at home against the defending NFC champ Atlanta
Falcons.
