LA Rams Pick Husker Edge Ochaun Mathis in NFL Draft’s Sixth Round

April 29, 2023

Husker fans sweat through five complete rounds to see a former Nebraska standout drafted. Then, not shown on TV, Ochaun Mathis got his call. The former Nebraska edge rusher was selected by the Los Angeles Rams with the 12th pick in the sixth round (No. 189 overall) of the NFL Draft on Saturday.

Mathis stated his case for an NFL future at the combine, where he ran a 4.74 40 and a 4.38 shuttle while his broad jump measured 9 feet, 10 inches, his vertical touched 33.5 inches and he posted 21 bench press reps. Before that, Mathis competed in the annual East-West Shrine Game, where he showed his potential as an edge rusher at the next level.

The 6-foot-5, 260-pounder made a career-high 48 tackles at Nebraska last season, along with 3.5 sacks. He combined for 135 tackles, 15.5 sacks in four seasons at TCU previously.

“Coming in and being able to put on muscle mass and keep the speed, but build on top of it is one of my biggest things to work on,” Mathis previously said of his adjustment from TCU to Nebraska. NFL scouts believe Mathis requires more time in the weight room to hold his own with an NFL lineman but has the athletic capabilities to do so.

Mathis transferred to Nebraska from TCU a year ago to the day, April 30, 2022, as the top edge rushers in the transfer portal. He visited Nebraska during last year’s Red-White Game and determined Lincoln was the next place for him.

Mathis is the first Nebraska defensive lineman to be drafted since Carlos Davis in the seventh round of the 2020 draft.

The Rams also selected former Wake Forest defensive lineman Kobie Turner in the fifth round of this year’s draft.
