Lenhardt, Nation Joining Nebraska This Month After Signing Announcements

January 04, 2023

Nebraska continued its exhilarating rise up the recruiting rankings on Tuesday with the latest announced additions to its 2023 recruiting class.

Matt Rhule took over with a recruiting class outside the top 60 and 12th in the Big Ten. By the time his head hit the pillow on Tuesday, Nebraska cracked the top 25 and holds the conference’s fourth-best recruiting class.

Four-star edge Cameron Lenhardt and 3-star cornerback Ethan Nation both signed with Nebraska in December. They did so in secret, waiting to announce their decisions until the Under Armour All-America Game. Nation made his announcement prior to Tuesday’s kickoff at Camping World Stadium. Lenhardt put on a Huskers hat just before the fourth quarter began.

They both played for Team Speed in Tuesday’s game and showed moments of promise in the 14-7 loss. Nation tracked his receiver in one-on-one coverage and knocked a pass down at the goal line early in the fourth quarter. The ESPN production team praised the fourth-down play from the new Huskers cornerback. Lenhardt, meanwhile, made his biggest play on third down midway through the fourth quarter. The former IMG Academy standout shed a blocker and finished a sack started by defensive tackle Kelby Collins.

Nation, a standout from Roswell, Georgia, was offered a scholarship and an official visit in the same day. Rhule’s coaching staff got him to Lincoln that weekend for his visit.

“They got me up there fast and they just showed me a whole bunch of love and made me feel like home,” Nation said on the broadcast. When asked what he hoped to do at Nebraska he answered, “Bring a championship, hopefully.”

Nation said he picked a school where he could make the most out of his opportunity. Over 50 schools offered Nation, including Alabama, Notre Dame, Michigan, Auburn, USC and Georgia.

Lenhardt was a highly coveted 4-star edge rusher when the Huskers secured his commitment back in August. He decommitted less than a month later after the firings of Scott Frost and Erik Chinander. Rhule’s coaching staff got back in touch with Lenhardt, brought him to Lincoln for an official visit in December and secured his signing. The former aspiring DJ, who once DJ’d an Easter Egg hunt at the White House, said he grew up watching the All-America Game and dreamed of making his decision on national television.

Lenhardt sat down next to Matt Schick and put on the Nebraska hat.

“Matt Rhule is from my area and a lot of the coaching staff, we have mutuals,” Lenhardt, a native of Staten island before moving to IMG Academy in Florida, said, “and the relationship I built with them over a short period of time, it influenced me and helped with my re-commitment.”

Schick reminded Lenhardt that the Nebraska fan base, and the program itself, is hungry to win. He asked the newest member of the recruiting class how they get there.

“We want to get back to that Blackshirt defense,” Lenhardt said. “Top-tier defenses, they’re going to add a great pass rusher, somebody that’s going to get after the quarterback and we’re going to take it to the next level.”

Tom Luginbill and Craig Haubert discussed Nebraska during the broadcast from the booth. Luginbill pointed out the coaching staff pinpointed the line for a potential Blackshirts resurgence. Lenhardt is the fourth 4-star defensive lineman in the 2023 recruiting class, including former Texas A&M transfer Elijah Jeudy. Luginbill said they’re “explosive, tough, good defensive linemen” to the 2023 recruiting class.

Luginbill, a recruiting analyst for ESPN, also gave a shoutout to Bob Wager, one of Rhule’s new staff additions. Wager coached the Under Armour All-America Game last season and is highly regarded in national recruiting circles. Rhule reportedly added Wager from Arlington Martin to be tight ends coach and assistant special teams coordinator at Nebraska.
