Mailbag: How Many at the Spring Game?

February 14, 2017

How many fans will show up for Nebraska’s annual spring game? That’s a great question and there’s reason to believe it’s going to be a lot. That’s just how Nebraska rolls. We’re talking about the spring game, Bob Elliott and much more in this week’s mailbag because might be the offseason, but there’s still plenty to discuss around here.

Brandon Vogel, Jacob Padilla, Jake Jensen and Erin Sorensen answer your questions in this week’s Hail Varsity mailbag.

Q: Over or under 76,000 at the spring game? – 3.L.C.

JJ: Over.

ES: There were 72,992 people in attendance for the 2016 spring game, so I think Nebraska can find another 3,000 or so people to attend. I’ll take the over.

Q: This Bob Elliott? Same Bob Elliott who is father of SNL vet Chris and grandfather of SNL vet Abby? – M.R.Z., Lincoln, Neb.

BV: No, the other Bob Elliott. Son of Bump Elliott, former Michigan man and Iowa athletic director.

JP: Who somehow does not have a page on Wikipedia.

Q: How big of a steal did Nebraska get with Nana Akenten? – T.J.K., Glenwood, Iowa

JP: A pretty big one, I’d say, but don’t just take my word for it. Ask Eric Bossi of Rivals. Bossi said Akenten is making a strong push to crack the tail end of their final 2017 Rivals150. When I look at Akenten, I see a guy with a high floor and a high ceiling as well. If he never develops into anything more than he is now, that’s still an athletic 6-foot-6 wing who can shoot the ball, and guys like that are incredible useful. I think he has the potential to be more than just a 3-and-D guy as well, though. He’s having a heck of a high school season with Bollingbrook and I think Husker fans will really enjoy watching him play once he arrives in Lincoln.

Q: With the recruits that we have coming in, will Nebraska football win 11 games or are we looking at 9 or lower? – M.H.

JJ: I think 8 or 9 wins would be a solid performance by Nebraska in 2017. I think a lot of Nebraska’s success will depend on if Tanner Lee can step in and be successful and if the offensive line can take a step forward more so than the 2017 recruiting class.

BV: If the over/under on Nebraska’s 2017 season win total was set at 10.5, I’d take the under without hesitation. I’d probably put the number at 8.5 and even then I’d be tempted to take the under.

Q: What are the top three things that need to happen in the fall to propel the Huskers into a top 15 recruiting class? – B.

  1. Get them on campus during the spring and summer.
  2. Be extremely aggressive in getting recruits on campus for official visits early in the season.
  3. Win.

Q: Favorite defunct stadium? By the way, I’d love to see Ebbets Field. I’ve also wondered about picking one random game in the past to time travel to. – M.S., Cook/Tecumseh, Neb.

JJ: The Alamodome.

BV: Take me back about 105 years to the South End Grounds in Boston.

ES: Rosenblatt. Rest in peace, my friend.

Q: Is Nebraska men’s basketball still recruiting David Wingett?

JP: Wingett still has a lot of work to do on his end.

Q: How much do you offer Ty Lue assuming Cavs lose next 2 finals, and Lebron gets him canned? +-$4.5million – W.W., Omaha, Neb.

BV: Would it be worth it at $4.5 million? Probably, but I can’t see Nebraska getting there. For reference, there were only four coaches last year that made more than $4.5 million. Tom Izzo doesn’t make that kind of money. If Nebraska could get Lue for $3.5 million it would still seem like a lot for a non-basketball blue blood but it feels more like a reasonable step up (based on Lue’s track record) from some other Power 5 schools.

Q: Who is the best FIFA player on the team and what teams do they play as? – D.

JJ: FIFA is not a fun game. Give me rocket league any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

BV: FIFA is a fun game and I suspect the competition would be pretty fierce given its popularity. We’ll have to ask around on this one.

JP: To which team are you referring? If you mean basketball, I talked to Isaiah Roby about video games before the season and he called himself the “King of FIFA,” but also said they haven’t played as much since the new one came out. Roby also said Glynn Watson Jr. is the best at NBA 2K and James Palmer Jr. is the best at Madden.

ES: As for the football team, FIFA has come up a lot. I’m going to have to go back and dig through my notes because I know the football team loves the game. I’m fairly certain the coaches have even mentioned it being played in the players’ lounge. As Brandon said, we need to do more asking around on this.

Q: Do we need a quarterback in the ‘18 class? – G., Dakota City, Neb.

JJ: You need a quarterback in every class. If that leads to transfers in the future, you deal with it, because that usually means you landed a pretty good one. Going through classes without taking a quarterback leads to situations where Nebraska’s backup quarterbacks are Ron Kellogg III and Ryker Fyfe, and I don’t want to live in that world anymore.

Q: Do you think it’s wrong that they included cats in this year’s Westminster Dog Show? – J.L.

JJ: I’m just going to root for the bloodhound to win again.

JP: Yes. #TeamDog

Q: Red or white wine? – B., Milwaukee, Wisc.

JJ: Beer. Wine’s expensive.

ES: Depends on the day.
