Mickey Joseph Provides Updates on Nebraska’s Quarterbacks and More

November 15, 2022

The Nebraska quarterback room has suffered a number of injuries so far this season, but it sounds like starter Casey Thompson is more probable to play against Wisconsin after being out for multiple games.

Interim head coach Mickey Joseph confirmed that Thompson practiced on Tuesday and made some throws. Joseph expects Thompson to practice every day leading up to the Wisconsin matchup, but that it’ll remain “day-to-day” for him to play.

As for backup Chubba Purdy, he will be out for the remainder of the season. Purdy suffered a high-ankle sprain on the road against Michigan and will have surgery for it in the next few days.

While Logan Smothers has also been beat up a bit, he’s still expected to be available for Nebraska on Saturday. If he has to start, Joseph said that Jarrett Synek—a walk-on from Hastings—would back him up. Synek was working with the second-team offense on Tuesday.

More news and notes:

>> Myles Farmer has returned after a suspension following an arrest and citation on suspicion of driving under the influence.

>> After being hit on the sideline against Michigan, Joseph expects offensive coordinator Mark Whipple to coach from the box against Wisconsin and Iowa.

>> After that hurdle from Alante Brown at Michigan, he provided some insight to Joseph on why he made that decision.

“I’m trying to win the football game,” he said.

As a result, Joseph said that he “always rides with Alante.” He also added that Brown is feeling better after the fall on his neck.

>> What does Joseph have to say about the next head coach at Nebraska?

“Whoever takes this job better be ready to work,” he said.

>> Saturday will be Nebraska’s Senior Day, but who does and does not walk may not be a true indicator of who will and will not return in 2023.

“You could have two Senior Days,” Joseph joked, saying that someone could choose to come back after walking on Senior Day.

For example, Joseph doesn’t expect wide receiver Trey Palmer to walk. As for edge Garrett Nelson, he confirmed he doesn’t plan to walk (but also doesn’t know if he will return).
