One of Nebraska football assistants may be headed to the NFL, but the other nine — as well as head strength and conditiong coach Zach Duval — have signed their contract extensions with the university. Hail Varsity obtained copies of the extensions on Monday, which were offered to a majority of the staff on Jan. 15.
Offensive coordinator Troy Walters and defensive coordinator Erik Chinander were the only two extensions delayed, but both received their offers on Feb. 4. Both were pending due to a 2015 memorandum, which requires approval from Nebraska President Hank Bounds when the salary exceeds $500,000. Walters salary is $700,000, while Chinander’s is $800,000.
The contracts for Nebraska’s assistant coaches origially ran through Dec. 31, 2019. The one-year extensions moves that date to Dec. 31, 2020. There are no changes to salaries.
While it was originally expected for Nebraska’s assistant coaching staff to stay in place for the 2019 season, coach Scott Frost announced Monday that defensive line coach Mike Dawson has accepted a coaching position with the New York Giants. Dawson originally signed his new contract with Nebraska on Jan. 19.
