Nebraska Announces ‘Modernized’ Original Herbie Husker For Saturday’s Spring Game

April 17, 2023

The new Herbie, kind of like the old Herbie, is back.

On Monday, the university confirmed a logo for the new Herbie Husker. The “slightly modernized” new Herbie Husker mascot will be introduced to Nebraska fans during the annual Red-White Game on Saturday.

“Herbie Husker has been one of the iconic symbols of Nebraska athletics for nearly 50 years,” Nebraska Athletic Director Trev Alberts said in a statement. “Our fans are passionate about all things related to the Huskers, and they have a particular fondness for Herbie.  We are excited to present modernized Herbie Husker marks and logos and thrilled to unveil our new Herbie mascot at Saturday’s Spring Game.”

Alberts and other university officials collaborated to discuss an updated, more modern Herbie logo and costume. The costume leaves the modern work shirt-jeans combo as worn by Herbie since the 2003 redesign, for the traditional overalls. The teaser video released on Monday seems to show a red cowboy hat with the block N, gray overalls with the block N over a white T-shirt and work boots. A release from the university states Alberts and leadership wanted to reflect tradition and the state’s background during a
celebration of Herbie Husker’s 50th year.

Nebraska Director Licensing Lonna Henrichs and Spirit Squad Head Coach Erynn Butzke headed the new logo initiative. As an extension of the athletic department, they worked with Torch Creative since January last year to develop new logos. They wanted to make a more digital-friendly Herbie that featured the traditional blonde hair, overalls and an ear of corn in his pocket.

Along with the new Herbie Husker logo and mascot comes 10 varsity sport-specific logos. The university also confirmed updates to Lil’ Red and the Blackshirts logo.
