The Beatrice, Nebraska, native has been a multi-year starter at center for the Huskers. He’s been the main starter at his position since 2019 after making the switch from tight end to center.
Jurgens did not take part in Senior Day before the game against Iowa. Coach Scott Frost did note before that game that some players who didn’t take part in the ceremony might decide to leave school.
“We’re going to let some walk (honored for Senior Day) that are still going to make a decision after Senior Day whether they’re going to get two Senior Days or one,” Frost said. “A lot of guys we’d love to see come back again. We think it’s smart for those guys to probably celebrate Senior Day and then put their foot in the water and check and see what their (pro) status would be and make a good decision.”
Jurgens came to Nebraska as part of the 2018 recruiting class, which was Frost’s first recruiting class with the Huskers. Even though he’s listed as a redshirt sophomore, Jurgens has been on campus for four seasons. He is leaving two years of eligibility on the table. Jurgens has that extra eligibility because of the COVID eligibility freeze and his redshirt year.
The lineman has one of the more unique Husker success stories in recent memory. He arrived in Lincoln in 2018 after committing to the previous coaching staff. Jurgens also arrived at Nebraska as a tight end. He suffered a season-ending injury during the 2018 season. While hurt, Frost convinced his to add weight and move to center. He battled through learning a new position and snapping issues to become the third-team All-Big Ten selection by the coaches. He’s started 18 consecutive games for Nebraska.
Now he’s off to the NFL to chase his dream of playing professional football.
