Nebraska is a little closer to selecting its starting quarteterback for the 2018 season. Following Wednesday's practice — the 11th of fall camp — quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco shared a little insight on the decision and how it's shaping up.
Coach Scott Frost had previously said this past Sunday's scrimmage would start to clarify some things, and it sounds like that's exactly what happened. Redshirt freshman Tristan Gebbia and freshman Adrian Martinez appear to be the primary quarterbacks taking reps with the ones and the twos, and sophomore Andrew Bunch filling in as needed.
"I think what will happen as we move forward is probably [Gebbia] and [Martinez] will take a bit more of the bulk of the 1s and the 2s, so they'll switch off every other day," Verduzco said Wednesday. "We'll still make sure Andrew is getting in there with that group but that's kind of how it's shaking out right now."
Nebraska will hold another scrimmage at Friday's practice, which Frost has called a "watershed moment" for the quarterbacks in this competition. Verduzco agreed with that approach.
Until then, Gebbia and Martinez will handle most of the reps with the top units.
"Right now they're going to take the reps with the ones and the twos and flip and flop and all sorts of business and make sure it's as even as we possibly can make them," Verduzco said. "[Bunch] will take some reps with those guys as well and then we'll have our scrimmage on Friday and then Frosty at some point will ask us for our opinion and what direction we want to go."
While the decision has yet to be made, Verduzco does feel comfortable with where his group is now. There have been better days than others, but the quarterbacks are picking up the playbook and finding their way. He's confident they'll all be fine, no matter who is ultimately named the starter.
And it sounds like the decision could be coming soon.
"Frosty is going to ask us what direction we think we should go and everyone will have an opinion about it and so on and so forth and he's going to have the final call," Verduzco said. "It's coming."
