The alternates pay tribute to the 1983 Husker team, nicknamed “The Scoring Explosion.” The uniforms are a modernized version of what that squad wore, featuring mesh on the red jersey and red stripes on the side of white pants.
Nebraska did not win one of its five national championships in 1983, but went 12-1 with a team that featured Heisman-winning running back Mike Rozier. As the nickname suggests, the Huskers also scored a lot that season, averaging 50.3 points per game. That number was the highest in college football that year by over eight points per game.
It is not yet known when Nebraska will wear the throwbacks this season.
