Recruiting never stops and it's easy to miss the top stories day-to-day. Recruiting analyst Greg Smith recaps all things Nebraska recruiting news, analysis and more so you never miss a thing.
Well, one of Nebraska’s tight end targets for the 2020 class is off the board.
Over the weekend, Tampa Jesuit tight end Jonathan Odom committed Florida. It wasn’t a huge shock since his dad played there. The Gators are getting a good one in Odom. Nebraska was early on him before his stock really took off, as the Huskers look to likely bring in one tight end for the 2020 class.
Last season, the tight end group combined for 28 catches, 374 yards and three touchdowns. We didn’t get to see it in Year 1 but tight ends coach Sean Beckton said this spring that the tight ends are a big part of what they want to accomplish.
“In our offensive scheme, the tight ends are a huge portion of it,” Beckton said. “We try to use everyone in our scheme. We don’t want to be one-dimensional. The tight ends have to understand if they aren’t getting open, the QB won’t throw to them. A lot of times we are the QBs first read. We need to show more in our vertical routes and we will get more balls thrown to us.”
As the Huskers continue to evaluate other targets, who are some of the other players at tight end to keep an eye on? The Huskers currently have double-digit tight end offers out for the 2020 class. Here are some key names:
- 4-star DJ Rogers (6-4, 230)
- 3-star Tommy Christakos (6-4, 200)
- 3-star Elijah Yelverton (6-5, 225)
- 3-star Brandon Frazer (6-5, 237)
- 3-star Donavon Johnson (6-5, 200)
- Unranked Kole Taylor (6-6, 225)
Tight end could be a pleasant surprise this season for the Huskers. If that happens, their pitch will be even stronger to potential 2020 players at the position that could really be an X-factor in this offense.
