Wednesday morning provided a few hopeful former Huskers one final chance to stake their claim for a dream. Nebraska’s Pro Day started in the Ndamukong Suh Weight & Conditioning Center, where many of their former football days started. It ended in the Hawks Championship Center, home of countless practices in the shadows of posters marking program’s immense history.
The day melded Nebraska’s not-too-distant past and its current trajectory. Members of Matt Rhule’s administrative staff arranged scouts from all 32 NFL teams. The various drill stations moved, once with metal bleachers near midfield to give scouts an intimate view of each drill. Current strength and conditioning coach Corey Campbell guided former Huskers as they warmed up on the side, stretching and increasing their ranges of motion.
All three Huskers who participated in the NFL Combine—Trey Palmer, Ochaun Mathis and Travis Vokolek—returned to Lincoln for the day. So did former team captain Garrett Nelson, fellow former team captain edge rusher Caleb Tannor, tight end Chancellor Brewington, linebacker Eteva Mauga-Clements, receiver Oliver Martin, receiver Omar Manning, long snapper Cameron Pieper and long snapper Brady Weas.
This year’s NFL Draft is April 27-29 at Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri.
Observations:
>> Current Huskers watching and cheering their former teammates were guided from the balcony portion of the Hawks Championship Center onto the field. Several groups of players attended at various points.
>> Former Husker Matt Masker threw to receivers for Pro Day.
>> Former Nebraska special teams coordinator and defensive coordinator Bill Busch was a special guest for Pro Day and spent part of the morning on the field at Hawks Championship Center. He was warmly welcomed by many defensive standouts who played for him last year.
>> Current Philadelphia Eagles lineman Cam Jurgens, who participated at last year’s Nebraska Pro Day before getting drafted, spent several minutes speaking with Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule. Austin Allen, another former Husker who just completed his rookie season in the NFL, also attended and chalked it up with staff and players.
>> In addition to administrative staff, all members of Nebraska’s coaching staff were on-hand, including most analysts.
>> Representatives from all 32 NFL teams were in attendance.
